Black Smoke On Exceleration

Having trouble with black smoke from my Avensis T Spirit D4D 2003 on a 53

Changed EGR valve just over 12mth ago, we are not getting the same problems before the change with excelleration but we are with excessive black smoke from exhaust when excelleration and changing gear??

I have just been reading on the forum that the DPF filter might need cleaning/changing but where is it on my car or do I have one I dont know??? or could it be a problem with the MAF sensor ??

What would anyone recommend to clean it with?? :

Be much appreciated if anyone could help, thanks

You could use good old Carb cleaner on the EGR valve. Thats what I have used in the past with an old tooth brush. But I found that using a fuel like Shell V-Power derv help keep it cleaner than the crappy supermarket fuels. When I did mine last the deposits were like a thin layer of soft black velvet, and not the hard black carbon you'll find on some posts on here. RICKD4D did a very good "How to" take a search for it.

But I'd also try getting hold of a bottle of BG244 (Off eBay or powerenhancers, about £22) and run that though the fuel tank. You might find that it will help your DPF 1st befor looking at the expensive DPF change. It really does work I've found. :toast:

Stuck open EGR usually causes a power loss, most noticeable at the low end of the rev range and under high load, but not necessarily smoking.

If the car is fine from 800-1500 rpm but smokes like hell if you accelerate hard and/or go over 2000 rpm, it may be the turbo charger.

One thing you can try is filling it full of V-Power Diesel and giving it a good hard blitzing down the Motorway (c'est le tuneup d'italiano ) - That will make sure the DPF regeneration cycle can run, blow any carbon crap out the back, clean the injectors etc.

When you're done, let everything (esp. the turbo) cool off by driving more leisurely and normally on the way back.

Hopefully that will help...!

If it's still smoking tho', prolly time to get the garage to check it...!

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi all, still need help

I took all of every ones advice, cleaned the EGR which is now fine, changed the air filter, put BG244 in tank, filled with Vpower deisel and gave a big blast on motorway. been running it now for a nearly 2wks and still feels like turbo lag (slow eccelerating and then picks up) still black smoke coming out. I have noticed with the window down that when I eccelerate I dont know if I am losing air or it is sucking air in. I checked the airmast meter flow pipe coming from the air filter and could not find any holes or cracks.......getting beyond the joke now

Has anybody any more ideas as I am still persisting with finding the problem if I can.

Just like to say thanks to everyone for the comments and advice before

regards

Garry
