My wife is swapping her 2009 Aygo blue for a new Aygo Go 5 door with aircon on Thursday so while at dealership yesterday asked for a price on mud guards.

With VAT they work out to less than £20 a pair but fitted the bill comes out at £141.68.

Why around a £100 for fitting?

I cannot see any obvious fitting locations so are the Aygo particularly awkward?

I may be tempted to fit these myself if not too difficult, has anyone carried out this job?

Any help much appreciated.

I bought a full set when I bought my aygo new in 2007.

I've never fitted the rears as it involved drilling the rear wings.

No mud has EVER come from the rear wheels onto the bodywork

in 4 years of ownership.

Rear mudguards are just NOT needed.

Fronts ARE needed. Spray & mud would go the full length of the sills.

They come with a set of fitting bolts which go into pre-drilled holes.

From memory, 3 each side. Put the guards in place, it's obvious where the bolts go.

They fit in ten minutes even being very careful & pedantic.

They work well.

Don't go mad with the spanner, gently ino the soft plastic.

I'd suggest buying just the fronts & fitting them yourself.

I THINK it's a 10mm spanner. That's all you need.

(About £17.00 & ten minutes of your time against £141.68)

Look at the rears of Aygos......No mud / dirt at all from the rear wheels.

Ian, I don't know where you drive then 'cos the slightest bit of rain and the back of our 'blue' turned black! Hence we had both front and rear mudflaps fitted

IMO those and the side rubbers which we now also have (after a nasty episode in Tesco's car park) are essential for a town car and should be standard fittings.

With the mudflaps the car still gets dirty but at least it still looks blue

I know what you mean about the back.

I had a Mk1 XR2 years ago which was the same.

I think it's down to aerodynamics.

The rear of an Aygo always seems to be misted with dirt.

(Actually, thinking about it, ours both get grimy very quickly).

But, It's not actual splashes of mud or dirt from the road,

it seems it's what gets dragged round in the slipstream.

It's a pity somebody can't do a test with only one rear mudguard fitted.

Perhaps for a definate answer, somebody could take off one and drive round for a week

(That should keep the sun out and the road dry for a bit!)

Fitting mud guards to an Aygo (facelift) is not a difficult job, but can take around an 40mins to fit - so £100 labour charge is about right for a Dealership.

In answer to the OP, a few of us have fitted them to the cars and if you use the search button I'm sure the threads will come up - one of which should be mine ;)

But for the record, the fronts are easy to fit as they have holes for fitting pre-drilled. Rears require a little minor drilling in the plastic rear bumper valance - not difficult at all.

In Sweden mudflaps are compulsary as they are for also for benifit of those driving behind you.have you ever driven behind a lorry thats got one missing in heavy rain.a nightmare.

with a hatchback or estate mudflaps make a differece to how mucky the rear of your car gets.

due to the vacuum effect that these vehicle develope, the back of a saloon does not get so dirty because of the less vacuum effect.

To fit the rear is easy. I did it all myself. You dont even have to take the rear wheels off.

What you will need is a electric drill, and it does mean driller your rear bumber. The rear mudguards already are moulded into the shape of the rear bumper. Its fitted with 3 bolts. Two into the rear of the bumper, and one that needs to be drilled upwards.

I had to use a electric drill, a crayon/pen to mark where the holes to be drilled. It did take me about 40 minutes to do, and its well worth it from all that crap being sprayed all over the back side of the car.

i think there should be instructions for fiiting mudflape on the toyota tec site.

also the time it takes to fit them.(for workshop benifit)

less than 15 mins for the set all you need is a 10mm spanner and a screw driver......you dont even need a drill thats why the screws you get in the pack are called self tappers.....their is wee dimples on the rear bumper were the screws go and the fronte are held on with 10mm self tappers..

i'll see if i can get some pics up or if your lucky i might do a walk through depending on whats in work wise tomorrow

Are you sure those are stock bolts? They look like theyre from Frankensteins neck! lol. The rear mud flap where Philips cross head screws. I ve never seen bolts tick out as much as that on any front mud flap guard.

Posted

Yes they are stock bolts, I did buy a front set and as advised they are easy to fit into the plastic which is already in place on the car.

Still mulling over about the rears.

Thanks for all the very useful replies.
