aliright im curius to know how much power that has been made from a 5E block without resorting to using a turbo or s/c....

has anyone herd of anyone fitting throttlebodys to this engine

im guessing 160bhp is possible

can anyone verify this?

Posted

Geo Jam do a 5E of the shelf but don't know what p.s. they are or what mods they do to them. 160 might be achievable but i'm not too sure..

160 bhp without a turbo??? even with a rebore, and bigger injectors id be shocked to see that much. with NOS i suppose, with the turbo yeah, good luck mate

The rule of thumb for a well prepared n/a engine is 100bhp per litre. So 145-150bhp.

This would involve:

- porting and gas flowing the head

- different cams

- higher compression ratio

- forged pistons, all balanced to 1g of each other

- lightened and balanced rods - all to 1g of each other

- lightened flywheel

- baffled sump

- individual throttle bodies

- better exhaust manifold

- larger injectors.

have you ever taken part in any form of motorsport?

Hello.

I work for a restoration company specialising in classic Lancias, but also other makes as well. We do everything on site from bodywork to engine work. We have a full machine shop on site as well. A lot of jobs are quite complicated. Some of our work is competition preparation, so are used to dealing with all these types of things. I haven't raced myself apart from a bit of karting, but we do have a racing Lancia which is used in the Historic series of races. I am building myself a Lancia Montecarlo for track work in my spare time including a high performance engine which I am building myself.

The Seras are a bit of a niche. I bought a Sera in 1998 after seeing one at an auction where I was buying a Lancia 037 for a Japanese customer. When I got mine, Toyota didn't want to know and because we ship Lancia parts to garages and people in Japan, they were helpful in sending Sera parts back.

I could prep a 5E-FHE to competition specifications, but the costs of getting 10hp out of a normally aspirated engine are about the same as 50hp out of a turbo engine. The other downside is that a race engine is generally happiest at the top end of the rev range, but at the bottom end is a little untractable - the way around this is to have two sets of camshaft profiles - one wild for top end power and something a little more flexible for low down. This is the crux of the Honda Vtec system and the other such systems used by other companies and engineering this into the 5E series of engines would be virtually impossible, or so expensive to almost be classed as impossible.

I've no idea what a 5E-FHE engine would cost to "race" spec, but it would run into the thousands. Custom parts are not cheap and there is a lot of time, measuring, weighing and balancing / polishing that all adds up and for the cost of the build you could make a monster turbo version.

Wow, did you ever get to drive the 037?

The engines also become quite highly strung aswell, and tempremantal. But a great laugh lol

No I didn't, but I'm building my Montecarlo along similar lines.

We've got a Stratos in the family car collection though. I do drive that...

Hmmm

do u fancy poping to mine for tea and biscuts........ oh and bring the stratos or your not welcome :group-cuddles: :P

But seriously, whats it like to drive, how often does the ferrari engine need servicing, what does it handle like.. an MR2 on steriods or somthing? lots of info please lol

The Stratos is a very involving car. Mid engined Ferrari V6. Not especially powerful compared to modern standards at 190bhp, but its the way it uses them that makes it special. The car isn't very heavy and has no driver aids, and has a very communicative and direct steering. It demands a certain respect, especially in the wet and because its so nimble you have to concentrate when driving it.

The Ferrari engine is very reliable if serviced properly.

I'll take some snaps and post them up...

If you've found the Stratos in Gran Turismo 2 then chances are its ours - we took it to Donington Park for sound sampling and photography :-)

God, to think that they brought that out in the 70's... hell they were still building the E-type then. Its such an amzing car, the feel of it must be gripping... the driving sensation.. god...

hey toyotasera.co.uk, i thought the vvtl and like systems that toyota has on their motors was designed with the low and high power in mind. "streetable" is the term in the states. here is a good thing about the 5efhe, it has ACIS which is the early version of vvtl, or so i am told. i am pretty sure that these thigs would allow you to build a pretty cool 5efhe for VERY mild competition. good luck with the project if you decide to take it up ;).

Not all 5E-FHE have that intake.
