Service is tomorrow and i'm a tad confused about which oil to buy....

did a wee search on the forum for "oil" and came up with nothing.... which i know is a lie cos i've read stuff in the past.

So, what are people buying?

I currently have Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30. Only bought 5L and been advised i need 6.5L...

Thanks

I use Morris's 5W/30 semi synthetic. You need 5.9 litres a shown in the data sheet pinned above.

I'd still use the Mobil 1 ESP as it meets the C2/C3 spec as well as others. Try looking on eBay as I bought a brand new 5ltr container for £26 delivered. There is a seller on there at the moment who is doing 10ltr for £62 including delivery as a "Buy it Now".

Out of curiousity - what oil does Mr T use when doing a service on the T180?

It depends on the main dealer. Some use a semi-synth and other use a full synth. Always better to find out befor they start the job and you hand over your cash... I know what I'd want going into my engine. And it wouldn't be a semi!!!

I always provide my own oil to the main stealers for a service as it knocks a fair chunk off the cost & it's your choice what goes in your motor.

I am a fan of Castrol Edge from using it in my Honda - has any one tried it in the RAV?

This is what got me. When I provided my own oil they told me that discounting the oil off the price of the service was difficult as it was fixed price and already reduced compared with each individual item in the service.

As such, to discount the oil would have put everything up to full price which would have made the saving negligable. Rightly or wrongly, I trust Toyota to put the right oil in their own cars so took my oil back and allowed them to put their oil in.

At least if I have an oil problem I can point the finger at Toyota themselves!!

I spoke to the Toyota dealer on Thursday on this very subject and was told that the oil they use (5w-30) was specifically designed for the D4D (yeah, right) and has "low ash" properties which this engine requires - while the car is in it's 3 year warranty (not 5 like you lot get) it'll have what Toyota recommend, after that it goes on best fully synthetic.

As an aside, I'd never use fully synthetic in a new engine coz I don't think it lets them run-in properly.

Strange thing about this engine though, it's now done over 7000kms and the oil is still almost clean, my old VW TDi would have an oil and filter change and 50 miles later it was black as soot again,,

I think they are taking the :censor: mate. There is no reason (That I can see) that they can't discount the price due to you supplying your own oil. There is a price for how many ltr of oil they'd use. I would get a price from the parts dept for the oil and ask why they can't knock that amount off! If they didn't want or like to do that I'd vote with my feet and go to a dealer who would.

I've taken my Vw's/Audi in to dealers(When they were under warranty) and supplied my own Castrol Edge oil and they were happy to knock the £70 or so off the price...

as they would charge you for something that was not included in the service plan,so why cant they refund you for suppling your own oil.

I agree with both these comments. I have historically alway provided my own oil at this same garage but this time he said it would screw up the pricing.

All that said it was a God send. I hadn't bought enough!!!!

Next time I will plan a bit more ahead and chat with them to ensure I can supply my own.
