Hi guys and gals, I'm marc and live in the west midlands. I have recently (around 6 months ago) inherited a 2005 Rav XT3 d4d with no manuals or other documents, all was grand until about a week and a half ago... i have no idea if any of this is linked or not so will start from the beginning. as i rounded a bend, right hand 60mph, on a dual carriageway a yellow can with a wave below lit up briefly. i wondered what it was as i continued on the rest of my journey, this happened again on another right hand bend on the motorway. so i done a search and found that it was an oil light so topped up with the only oil i could find (tesco own brand :!Removed!: ) and all was fine... a couple of days ago i noticed a slight hesitation after a gear change this has gradually gotten worse and going over 3k rpm there was a massive flat spot which continued after changing gear, driving home tonight i got an eml on along with the above problems. The car has covered 71k and is due a service. i have tried unplugging the MAF tonight which made little/no difference

so where do i turn, i currently have a 150 mile round trip commute and dont want to kill my car, is it ok to drive? any common problems? all help will be gratefully recieved

Many thanks

Marc

Hi Marc,

If a warning light come on a dash board you should have stopped as soon as safe as possible! And not just carried on driving... This is just the driving instructor coming out of me now! :yes: . Amber lights (Although important) are not quite as important as Red ones but they do require attention. I understand that you didnt have a manuel so it can be tricky.

Sometimes when you go round a sharp bend (And you're say low on engine oil) this can light up as the sensor is starved of oil for a moment. What I'd do is give it a good service using a good quality of oil that meets the specs for you car. Go onto Opie Oils or Castrol web sites and type in your reg and it will give you what oil you need as well as the specs and how many Ltr's you'll need.

Have a look at how to clean the EGR valve and check out the condition of it. The MAF can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner or something that is specially designed for the job is CRC spray thatt can be bought on eBay for a tenor. You can have a look at CRC cleaner on U Tube...

Hope you get it sorted :thumbsup:

You'll have to pay quite a bit for a Toyota service. And I wouldn't expect them to do the car for tomorrow (Unless they're not busy and you're lucky) as you usualy have to book it in days in advance. Have you got any know how with cars? Changing the oil and fliters is an easy job mate. If you were anywhere Cardiff I'd give you a hand doing it :thumbsup:

£165 for the service which i thought was reasonable (ish) more of a time issue tbh, i have some mechanical knoweldge but this was learnt on mini's fiestas etc so sensors etc are getting a little beyond me. i live near Birmingham and am working in bristol at the minute 10hrs+ per day. My biggest concern is driving with the eml on as well as the lack of boost whilst joining the motorway

Buy a can of BG244 and add this to the fuel. You can get it offf powerenhancers or eBay for about £22 a tin. It might start to help clean the EGR valve. Yer thats about the right price I recon for a service. Hope you get it sorted :thumbsup:

so a quick update.....

she who must be obeyed took my car yesterday, the EML had gone out and didn't return although the problem was still there. I booked the rav into mr t for a service and a run on their diog. today, have got the car back and the problem is still there but seems to be slightly better, perhaps a placebo effect though, I'll find out better tomorrow when i chance my 150 mile commute :unsure: they did find 3 fault codes stored on the ecu which were

1 P0100 MAF circuit

2 P0110 Intake Air pressure circuit

3 P0627 Fuel pump control circuit open

their comment was possibly SCV valves, it does seem to be quite a common fault

knowing my luck not a cheap fix, although I'm still hoping its poor/contaminated fuel and a couple of tanks from a different garage will cure it.

SCV valves are not too big a deal, at least not enough to worry about.

A little fiddly but you shouldn't have much trouble doing it yourself, mr T would probably charge you a fair penny to do it for you, have a look at this;

ok now it is something !!!

1 P0100 MAF circuit ---> it is necessary to clean it from carbon + degrease it;

2 P0110 Intake Air pressure circuit ---> change an air filter + test VSC valve mounted on the turbo -- it looks it has sticked open releasing an air pressure;

3 P0627 Fuel pump control circuit open ---> read my post regarging SCV before may be two days ago.

All must be in order after checking withthe above.

Good luck/Igor

hmmn some more possibile answers thank you igor, i think i may have caused the MAF fault when i unplugged it, new air filter fitted today as well. i had hoped the service would sort it completely but alas no. the 627 code definately seems to be common to the scv problem. is the VSC valve easy to locate and clean?

thanks for all the help so far people

If you have ramps you might find it easier from underneath. Take the driver's side plastic shield off and look up at the red and green solenoids in the HP pump under the inlet manifold.
