T3-X Auto Gearbox Query

Hi all

I have just Got my hands on a 2004 Avensis T3-X Auto.

I was checking the fluid levels when i noticed that the gearbox oil was rather black rather then the pinky red colour it should be.

I wanted to know if anyone has experianced changing the oil and filter in one of these boxes before.

Is it straight forward or is itcomplicated?

Any help on this would be great.

I have never done an Avensis Auto, but I did an auto trans fluid change on a Nissan Primera CVT, and its a simple case of removing the drain plug on the underneath of the transmission and waiting for the fluid to drain out. Not all the fluid will drain though as some will be left in the torque convertor and the fluid cooler pipework. Usually, between 3 and 5 litres will drain out. On the drain plug, there is sometimes a magnet that picks up swarf and metal fragments from the gear oil and most do not have a readily accessible filter.

It is usually sufficient to drain the fluid, clean the drain plug magnet, and refill with the same amount of fluid that is drained. If the fluid is really dirty and smells foul and burned, then do the fluid change with some cheap fluid, then after another 50 miles do another change of fluid, as that will allow the remaining old fluid left in the system to mix with the new fluid, and then this can be drained out.

Use only Automatic transmission / Power steering fluid though and you are right that it should be a nice pink / red colour when new.

Refilling most auto boxes needs a funnel as you fill the box through the dipstick tube. Check the level with the engine running after a short drive with the fluid warm.

you need to put the right atf oil in and has to be the right amount half a liter to little or to much and it will end up damageing your gearbox in short period........
