That Engine Oil Again !

No need to change it as they got the correct oil from the branch whilst I was sitting in McDonalds posting on here. It just meant I had to wait a bit longer for their mechanic to return with right oil. When I got the car back I checked the dipstick and the oil had been changed. It was also really thin and runny so I belive it is the right oil. The Excellent mpg backs this up.

I'm pleased because they were very polite about it all and not the least arrogant with any form of 'we know better' attitude. My car was washed and valeted as well. Smells a bit too flowery now though.

Cheers

It was Arnold Clark Toyota at Linwood, Scotland. And I'm on a service plan so I know that this rare and expensive oil will have eaten into the plan's profit margin.

Been out all day and the mpg display is sitting at 71.4. The oil is working well with the 19c heat. It may also be my imagination but when hitting the power band today on the motorway I didn't think that the engine noise was loud as it was before the service. Anybody else experience this?

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had my Gen 3 serviced at 10,000 miles. OW/20 put in without any prompting. Dealer has a card which list all models and the oil which must be used. Mind you the service was a lot compared to my Gen 2's I've owned. Dealer said it was the oil which resulted in £60 + VAT out of a total of £161 inc VAT. That's quite a mark up on my Gen 2's which were generally around £115 per intermediate. The dealer was good at getting me in at short notice for a Saturday morning service. For the record: RMB Northallerton. I've never had any particular issues with this centre so I keep going back. Andrew B is the Service Manager. Tops for service and customer care.

What has anyone else paid for their 10,000 service?

[/size Following on from the saga of the Prius engine oil grade I decided to do some research with regards to our Auris's as they will soon be coming up for their first service and oil change [July I think for the first ones - mine is due September]. B)

I quizzed my dealer about what they would put in and they said 0W/30, a discussion ensued and I wasn't happy with their insistence about this as they dismissed 0W/20 saying that 0W/30 was a listed grade, which is true but not the preferred choice.

Next step I quizzed Toyota [PLC] Customer Service and received the following reply to-day :---

Mr Terence Baldwin Our ref 587576 dated 26 May 2011

Dear Mr Baldwin

Thank you for your email dated 24 May 2011 regarding the use of engine oil

in your Toyota Auris Hybrid.

Having referred your comments to our Technical Department they have

confirmed that OW/20 is the preferred and recommended oil to be used in

your vehicle. However they also advise that as stated in your Owners

Handbook, other grades of oil, including OW/30 are also acceptable options

and can be used. OW/30 will not cause any damage to your vehicle engine.

Ow/20 is recommended as the proffered oil choice as this will provide the

vehicle with optimum fuel efficiency. This oil is however a more expensive

oil than OW/30.

Fish Brothers Swindon are not incorrect in using OW/30 in your vehicle,

however we would have expected them to provide you with the choice as to

whether you wished to use this oil, or the recommended OW/20.

Should you wish for OW/20 to be used during your vehicle service, please

inform Fish Brothers Swindon in order that they can order this oil for you.

I trust the above has now clarified our position in this respect and will

assure you as to the service provided by the Toyota Centre.

Yours sincerely

No your right, point taken but it is written at the bottom for a reason and I'm sure the person first posting this wouldnt like their name printed all over a forum especially when they are trying to help somebody.

The disclaimer is a standard email disclaimer. The optimum words are "for the use of the..." the intended recipient, Terry, has USED it as he saw fit, and is legally entitled to do so as the mail was addressed to him.

Had I been the first to post it having stolen it from his letterbox, or even shown it by him, then the publishing would have been wrong.

Interesting, you are in a slightly better position than Prius owners. The closest alternative we have in the handbook is 5w-30. My dealer informs me that 0w-30 might affect the (weasel) warranty.

This isn't a problem with the Gen III, because it always gets 0w-20. However, it is a problem with the family Gen II, where I would prefer to use 0w-30 rather than 5w-30 for improved lubrication at startup. I might just be persuaded that the Gen II engine is so badly built that it has massive cold clearances, and therefore needs the thicker oil, were it not for the stupidity interesting attitude of Toyota over the Gen III. If you didn't know, 0w (cold) oil is much thicker than 20 (warm).

According to the Toyota TGMO applicatin chart 0W/20 oil is listed as suitable for gen2 Prius from 2004 on along with 5W/20& 5W/30 oils. I have a 2008 T Spirit with 80,000 miles on the clock and run only on 0W/20 with no oil use between services and no problems at all.I do find an improvement in fuel consumption of about 2-3MPG.

Interesting, according to the Gen II manual:

If SAE 5W−30 oil is not available, SAE 10W−30 oil may be used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W−30 at the next oil change.

I'm not familiar with the TGMO application chart. Is there some way I can access a copy?

Many thanks. That explains the situation completely.

Toyota don't sell an own brand 0W-30 oil, so it doesn't exist.

Sorry about the delay in answering this post but somehow my 'Watch this Thread' got disarmed.

Yes 'Jan&tone' your interpretation was the same as mine so I published as it's MY mail.

As far as names, references and dates ect are concerned, in my opinion to establish credibility, this data

must be published otherwise it's unsubstantiated. Also I consider I have done Toyota [plc] a favour by publishing as it would stop many other owners mailing them the same question.

Just for the record, I also copied the Toyota mail to my dealer insisting they get the recommended oil for my car when serviced in September as per Toyota instructions.

Due to some obscure customer relation ethos of theirs, they didn't acknowledge or reply, so the crunch will come when I get their service reminder, Oh!! they haven't sued me either!

To be updated in September - Watch this Space.

Cheers TerryB

That does make it tempting to use 5W-20 for both cars. 2-3 mpg difference will recover at least the difference in cost between the oils.

The difference between 60mpg and 62mpg at £6.00 per gallon for 10,000miles is £32.26.

Compared with a difference of around £20 for the oil cost. If the Gen III is anything to go by, it should make it run a lot smoother too. Incidentally, in my experience, 2-3 mpg is also very close to the mpg improvement of Gen III over Gen II.

By all accounts if you use 5w30 in a gen3, the transition between electric and ice - ie engine start - is very rough instead of silky smooth and the increase in consumption is around 15-20 percent - this according to Grumpy Cabbie, who btw hasn't been around for a while...

toyota dealers have ALL been advised that 0w-20 is the ONLY oil to use in the Auris HSD and the Gen3 Prius at oil changes.

I to found that ICE starts are much less noticeable using 0w20 in the gen2, and my savings calculation on 2MPG becomes £47.62 at 3MPG witch I find a more realistic figure, and that more than pays for the oil, but I appreciate not every one may make the same saving.

Just got my HSD back and it was refilled with 0W-20 without asking (although I must admit to having a sneaky look at the job list, just to check, when I dropped it off).

Just for info, there appears to be an anti-rattle kit for the panel that covers the knee airbag on the HSD which was fitted as part of my 1st service and it's fixed my annoying buzz - looks like it might be a known problem!

Good for You - But we really need to know the dealer as you got such goood service, if mine defaults [in Wiltshire] I might have to take a trip to Gloucestershire.

Hi Terry, it's ToyotaWorld Bristol North at Patchway, just off the M4 / M5 Interchange heading towards Bristol. I've been dealing with them since 2004 for my old Avensis, my wife's Yaris and now the HSD and I've always had nothing but excellent service. When I had a minor coming together with a bus and broke the door mirror glass, they even fitted it and touched in the slight damage on the window frame FoC.

Hope that helps, Dave.
