Egr Valve Cleanout

After 19000mls decided to take a look at my EGR valve yesterday, (not that i have had any problems) anyway apart from skinned knuckles it was pretty straight foreward, however mine was a little different than most i have read about, The square hole in the Ctre was relatively clear, but the 2 side holes were partially blocked, The difference being that this was fairly loose "soot" not hard carbon that i have seen in others, i was able to remove this with cloths + WD40 the 2 side holes were more gungy and i twisted 6 pipe cleaners together to scoop out the gunge, the worrying part is that despite using a semi industrial vac some of this must have gone back down the holes, I took the EGR valve into my garage and soaked it in WD40 (couldn't get carb cleaner) and blew everything out with an airline, after scrubbing with the wifes toothbrush, put it all back together, it started first time, gave it an Italian tune up (5000rpm) on the motorway, All is well + car felt a bit more responsive, but I am still concerned at the amount of "soot" in the pipe + where it fixes to the engine and "WHY" we are having to do this, Also my Rav has used a little oil for the first time 3/4 of a litre since last service 4500mls ago should i be concerned  Stew

I did my EGR a while back and I found that the carbon deposits I'd seen on some of the "How to" threads was completely different to mine. All I found was a light dusting of black velvet soot that came off with ease. I think that it might be because I've always run my car on Shell V-Power derv and used BG244 in the fuel.

I used the wifes toothbrush to! Her teeth have a lovely black tinge to them now and smells of diesel! Just the way I like my women :naughty::wub::bye:

You need to lend her your razor as well Stew

You don't have to clean out the EGR if it doesn't give problems and all EGRs have soot in them as it is part of the Exhaust. They tend to stick when using supermarket fuel exacerbated with oil consumption.

Keep an eye on your oil consumption but if worried, Kingo's place will rebuild your engine for you (most likely).

I'm not sure that WD40 would be the best product to use, as it is an oil that is designed to stick around and lubricate things.

It will probably form a sticky substance for carbon to build up on and clog faster now?

Well, if you feel that way about your motor, it's not illegal , er, I don't think?

Is there also a drum kit in the back of that photo?..........Hang on, it can't be, can it? It's not Roger (Meddows) Taylor is it?......
