Reflectors

I've noticed that cars made in the last 3/4 years all seem to have reflectors on the bottom of the rear bumper...

is this a new law that was passed and can they legally be removed?

As far as I am aware all cars must have red reflectors at the rear so, if they are not built into the light cluster as they used to be, I suggest they should remain where they have been fitted by the manufacturer unless you can find a better place :)

All cars require reflectors to be fitted by law.

Alot of older cars them too, but they are built into the rear lights so are not so noticeable.

I think that you will fail an MOT without them fitted.

Yup it's been the law for ages! They had them in the 60s!

Can't say that I've noticed that?

All vehicles must have reflectors, but as far as I know most, if not all, have them built in to the rear light cluster.

I suspect those you may have seen with separate reflectors are cars that the owners have stuck extra ones on althouhh I have seen some odd Volvo's with orange reflectors stuck all round them.

Can you specify the make/model with extra ones and we can keep an eye out?

The new shape Auris has them fitted to the bottom of the bumper from factory.

oic - not seen an Auris HSD yet, mostly Prius where I live... loads of them around

I'm assuming they have the reflectors in the light cluster as well then....

Odd it doesn't mention a cut off date....

My dad's renault doesn;t have them at all, and it is not a n MOT fail, but it is old and they were never fitted, (or not invented lol)

If you read the VOSA guidance notes it makes reference to Regulation. This refers to the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) regulations. So an MOT inspection for reflectors is subject to these reglations.

VOSA regulations don't apply to to vehicles built BEFORE VOSA or MOT's existed!

It also doesn't have indicators or stop lamps, which according to that site are a fail!

But the OP was asking about RECENT cars, that's why I put that link up (as it is relevant to modern cars).

Absolutely, and the OP got their answer....

I was just pointing out that not ALL cars do, as also mentioned. I was wondering what the cut off date was as it wasn't mentioned and there isn't any obvious refference to it in that page.....

After all we are taking about laws and dates, so I'd not say it is wildly off topic....
