Hi Everyone

I have had my Engine management light on for sometime now but the engine or the car has not malfunctioned for one day. it starts at once, drives fine and even gives me between 43mpg and 45mpg atimes.

So i decided to buy the diagnostic meter myself for less than £20 and check why the light is on instead of checking it out at Mr T for £60 or local garrage for £30 and the error code i got was

P0027 Exhaust valve solenoid control circuit

P004F No description

Please Anyone with this type of issue before or with idea on how i can fix it if it is possible for me to do it myself as i intend selling the Avensis because i won't want to spend extra cost at Mr T or a local garrage.

Thanks in advance

hi matey

have you casualty misread it?? May be correct wording is (suction valve solenoid circuit) ??

the exhaust valves have no solenoids cos they are driven by camshaft.

Hi Igor

Thanks for your reply

the reading wasn't suction valve it reads as follows ''Exhaust Valve control solenoid circuit range performance''

i used ELM 327 to check it.

Thanks

Any help please!!!!

Hi mate,

sorry for the delay as I have been very busy and not on the Forum, anyway I have not come across this personally but here is a possible and general explainantion for most VVTI engines .... not just Toyota.

Continuously Variable Valve Timing ( your VVTI ) system is installed to the chain sprocket of the exhaust camshaft. This system controls the exhaust camshaft to provide the optimal valve timing. The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the Oil Control Valve(OCV), based on the signals output from mass air flow, throttle position and engine coolant temperature. The VVTI controller regulates the intake camshaft angle using oil pressure through the OCV. As result, the relative position between the camshaft and the crankshaft becomes optimal, and the engine torque improves, fuel economy improves, exhaust emissions decrease under overall driving conditions.

Have you disconnected the Battery Neg to try a reset, if not do that first.

Symptoms- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Warning Light)

Possible causes- Dirty engine oil

- Low engine oil level

- The Exhaust valve control solenoid circuit open or shorted

- Exhaust valve control solenoid circuit poor electrical connection

- Faulty exhaust valve control solenoid

When is the code detected? Well ...

the ECM monitors OCV stuck while cam signal is normally generating and Valve cleaning is not in progress. If the CAM Actutal Position is too high or low and Difference between Cam Actual Position and Desired Position is higher than around 20° the ECM determines that a fault exists and the P0027 codes is set.

So based on the above I would be looking at the oil as this is the cheapest option after that it gets more technical and the vvti timing controller needs to be checked to make sure the oil pressure can get to valve that varies the timing and I don't know how good you are with engines, it gets even harder after this stage so you may need assistance.

Regards and good luck .... Pete.

PS. sent this as a PM also.

I'll change the oil first and see how it goes
