hi all i have a 5gen 1990 auto st162 4WS soft top, and i was wondering if any one has done a convertion, to make it a GT4!!!!

as i have a 1990 5gen GT4 as well (rust rust and more rust) but every thing else in good order,

just wondering will the GT4 engine/gearbox fit?, also will the prop fit down the tonel as it is a 4WS, and will the diff bolt up.

before i go pulling it all apart

i know loom, ecu, brakes, rewire, act will have to be done, but i do have whole GT4 for parts

Dont do it honestly.

Thats a whole can of worms you're talking about opening there lol

Just buy a GT4, it'll be a lot cheaper and better than trying to make your car into a GT4.

hi thanks,

its just both cars are off the road the soft top with blown engine, and the gt4 with rust,

i have time on my hands at the moment, and i would like a gt4 soft top. i think i would just prob use the softop Shell as long as it would all fit,

dont like the though about the tonal for the prop!!!! or the diff!!!

i have looked on google but can find out if this is possable.

the last time i did a convertion was 15 years ago on a mini lol, but was that fast!!!

Well the turbo engine will go straight in but you'll need an MR2 Turbo gearbox so that you make the car FWD only. I dont see why this conversion cannot be done in a day with proper preparation and some help from someone who knows what they're doing.

To retain the GT4 gearbox and convert your car to 4WD will be an epic conversion. Instead of a day i'd expect this to take you a solid 2-3 months at least. And i'm talking full days working flat out, no doing it evenings and weekends - wont have any time to go to work.

You'd need to cut out the GT4 boot floor and swap it over with the boot floor in the convertible. Only then would you be able to mount the differential.

To do the job properly requires you to strip the convertible down to a bare Shell.

I'd take a look at Fensports Gen7 celica that they swapped in the GT4 drivetrain. They started in November 2005 and didn't finish until April 2006 and this is a proper professional company with all possible equipment available to them.

I've done plenty of engine/drivetrain swaps before but even i wouldn't want to start a job like that.

My advice is to forget about this one or simplify it and make it FWD.
