3S-Ge Oil Question

What type of oil do I use for my 3. gen. 3s-ge engine, semi or fully synthetic?

Any special brand that is best and what grade? Was going to buy Mobil semi 10-40 or something like that. What do you say about oil for this engine?

semi synthetic would be fine usually use full sythetic for turbo cars as they run very hot and burn oil..i used 10w 40 magnatec part synthetic a3/b4 in all my corolla gtis and is a good price to

No they dont. No car should burn oil (unless its a BMW 6 Cylinder or a Mazda Rotary). None of the turbocharged toyota's i've had have ever used any oil. If your GT4 uses a noticable amount of oil its either got a leak or something is worn out somewhere.

I use Toyota's own 10w40 Semi Synthetic. Its cheap and its what Toyota put in on a service. So its good enough for me.

I do an oil change on the GT4 every 3000 miles.

not exactly drink oil heat from the turbo wears down oil much faster best to use full synthetic as it can cope with the extra heat and stress especially modified engines..

i noticed magnatec 10w 40 lost a little every few months ive gone for valvoline 10w 60 full synthetic

Interesting..... a friend of mine with an MR2 Turbo found his engine used oil with magnetec too.... but not with other brands..... so maybe an issue with Magnetec?

i think there is an issue with magnatec for the 3sgte engine ive read in another post somwhere having the same problem on a mr2 turbo..the chap i bought my turbo off had ring failure on his st205 using magnatec..

probably cant cope with the extra heat from the turbo hence why im using full synthetic just to be on safe side.any decent brand full synthetic will do fine i used millers 10w 60 in the past but is quiet expensive so gone for valvoline 10w 60.i only paid £30 for 5 litres gives me the extra litre for topping up if thers any need

I agree with most of the above

Its not good to use full synthetic on older motors. Mineral oil leaves a coating on your moving parts and bearings (think big end). A full synthetic will remove this coating which you need.

I also agree that Magnatec is crap. I call it 'magnawreck'

Id use a 40 grade oil with a synthetic base.

10,15 or 20W40 will all be ok grades

I think 10W60 is too thick. The oil feed holes at the top of an engine are tiny. I saw a chart in our store where it said a synthetic5 or 10w30 oil takes about 6 to 8 secs to reach the top of the motor from start up ..and a 50 grade mineral oil took about 24secs to get there. As 90% of all wear is supposed to happen on cold starts a thinner oil is better.

Plus, if you are using a full synthetic oil .. a 30 or 40 grade is thin at the start so it can reach your camshaft quickly at start up, but it will thicken when it warms up. Im sure your car is meant to run on 40 grade and I would use a Valvoline 10W40. The 10W60 is for big old american V8's with larger oil feed holes.
