D4-D Smoke

Hi, think i may have the beginnings of a problem with my 2003 2 litre D4D avensis, it has 82,000 miles on clock and full service history. I purchased it privately last year and it has been great averaging 50 mpg,run on Shell diesel. Have noticed over last couple of weeks that when i'm accelerating onto the motorway all's fine till 3000 rpm, then i get plooms of yellow/black smoke from the exhaust....Turbo appears to be giving plenty of boost, and as soon as i change up the smoking stops. I must admit that i rarely rev the engine above 3000 rpm as at 70 revs are below this, i have not owned a common rail diesel before and thought it best not to over rev diesels?

Have read other threads regarding smoke but as car is fine apart from when it hits 3000 rpm was wondering if anyone has had trouble with the turbo, have read that it may be a variable vane type?..SOUNDS EXPENSIVE!!Also that EGR valves give trouble, but wouldn't i have smoke at all revs?

Any advice would be appreciated before i visit Mr T, at least i will be pre-armed, on that subject does anyone know of any independant Toyota diesel specialists in the South West area?

Thanks again

Gary

Hello & welcome to the forum,

in my opinion it's pretty normal to do that if you drive your car steady most of the time. I drive my car like that and it does need to be purged of all the crap now and then but first of all in your case the EGR valve needs cleaning out, do a search on here for a photo walk through of how it's done, quite straight forward really. You could try some Forte or BG244 injector cleaner in the tank and then drive it like you stole it for a while, it needs to be between 3000-4500rpm and under load for a few minutes, a long hill climb is best if possible. None of the modern diesels with all the emission controls on the engine like pottering around at low revs and since I started giving mine the odd blast I don't see the smoke anymore. Get a another opinion but the above is worth a try before you spend a lot of cash, it works for me and the advice came from my local Toyota Dealers best technican.

Regards Pete.

My EGR valve was replaced under warranty at 52,000 miles. It was replaced again at 93,000 miles. The car was then out of warranty, I was quoted about £420 so I complained very loudly and pointed out it had been replaced only 18 months earlier. The dealer rang Toyota who agreed to replace it again. apparently they will replace it up to 99,000 or thereabouts (it's a conversion from kilometres) provided it has a full service history (mine has been serviced by Toyota Main Dealer from new).

Hope this is helpful.

Maybe worth a call to Mr T then,

I have just been quoted £240 for bits from Toyota, looks a simple enough job to remove and clean which i'll try 1st.
