2.2 D4D T3X Head Gasket Dilemma

I wonder if the 2.2D4D is more prone to head gasket problems than the 2.0D4D because it's just a bored out version of the 2.0, thus making the gasket area around the cylinders that much thinner? (Assuming the 2.2 isn't a Renault.)

the 2.2 suffers just as much as the 2.0......and none of those engines are reno...none the only toyota that uses an other brand engine is the aygo..........

The 2.0 would be a diffrent block to a 2.2!

The issue i think probably lies with the headgasket, which disengrates overtime.

I am sure our resident tech could confirm this

the above is correct..the 2.2 isnt just a bored out 2.0 and its the coating on the gasket that goes pete tong

Correct me if I am wrong but Ireland is part of the EU ? if so then Toyota Ireland work under/report to Toyota Europe (TMME) in exactly the same way as Toyota UK incl Northen Ireland do. Toyota Europe have instigated a 7yr/111946 mile pan european warranty on all #AD diesel engines (2.0 & 2.2 ) for head gasket failure this being the case Toyota Ireland have to offer the same level of cover as Toyota UK are obliged to. Contact customer services armed with this info & point out you will contact a Mr Didier Leroy ( head of Toyota Europe ) should they be less than forth coming.

Can you tell me where I can see this 7yr pan european warranty as I have looked and can't find a reference to it anywhere...Cheers!

Last year I bought a second hand Avensis 2.2 D4D T3X with 80,000 miles on the clock and the gasket went after 5,000 miles. I had the car repaired and the engine practically rebuilt in a Toyota dealership in Northern Ireland. This weekend the head gasket went again after driving 40,000 miles and I have to pay 850 euros to have the gasket skimmed and driving chain reset. This car is without doubt the worst piece of crap I have ever driven. When I get it back next week I am going to trade it in for another make of car as I would never drive a Toyota again after the trouble it has caused me.

d I have to pay 850 euros to have the gasket skimmed and driving chain reset.

it wouldn't be the gasket that is skimmed but the head.

Except that according to Toyota skimming the head on these engines is not approved ...

(that's why they replace under warranty)

Guess I am lucky then, my 06 t180 has 153000 miles and still has 100% original parts (obv changed brakes).

Everything still working fine, and still pulls like it did when I bought it on 38k.

There are loads of engines that never gave any trouble .... you only hear about the ones that did.

The secret of a good reliable T180 is to drive it like you stole it  and give it regular servicing, the T180 is not suited to drivers who plod along at 40mph in 6th gear and spend most of the time in urban areas.

Pete.

Hi just like westslider I also got a replacement engine from Toyota 1st engine went at 93k miles all was great as Toyota fitted new engine free of charge and with a pat on the back as I was leaving the garage I asked the big question:? How long will this new head gasket last? and they said that it is a new modified head and you won't have any trouble with it just get it serviced when you hit 10k,

So on my way I went, 35k miles later with 3 services the head went AGAIN! So I contacted them and this time it was like everyone I spoke to had a personality change, no one wanted to know, no one explained to me that there was ONLY a 1 year warranty on the "NEW ENGINE" I mean a new engine that has done 35k, that's not good is it?,

The garage told me to contact customer relations head office uk so I did and the same storey with them, I'm sorry for your troubles but that's our policy, I said to them so your saying that a new Toyota engine fitted by Toyota is only good for 35k and they said your just unfortunate, tell that to my wife and kids as driving that car is my livelihood as I'm a taxi driver,

So I'm left with a Shell of a car with a crap engine what use is that.

I explained that I was very disappointed and would post my feelings about this situation on this site so anyone who has a Toyota and would have better knowledge to what's going on with this massive company and the care that they don't give you.

I'm not the only one I'm just putting it out there, maybe this might help someone else.

So can anyone give a likely life span of a replacement head gasket if old head skimmed etc?

Don't think anyone can answer that Ken, there's too many variables involved. How has the engine been doing so far?

Had it back for couple weeks and had some engine lights on intermittently, Scanner says EGR valve but is driving well! Lights off again now

The issue I am concerned with is it takes about 20 miles for the blue light to go off, blue light comes on when going down hills and sometimes when driving at 70mph on the motorway the blue light will come on and stay on for ages so it appears to be over cooling.

The garage had it for 2 weeks to "fix" it, new gasket and skim but I have it in my mind that they have removed the thermostat altogether. I am not sure where the housing is for this or indeed how easy it is to check and see if it has a thermostat fitted. I looks like it has only been topped up with water and no coolant but I could be wrong on that one

Thanks for your reply Tom

I'd be really concerned if it's taking 20 miles for the blue light to go off and I'd say the vehicle is not fit for purpose the way it's been given back to you. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if they left the thermostat out - done that myself getting rid of stuff through the car market eg something with a cracked block, whip the head off, stuff up the crack with steel wool and Hermetite then bolt it back together with hard setting Hermetite, used to happen all the time in the motor trade.

The dealer should be responsible to return the vehicle in roadworthy condition and In your case it's obviously not. Can you imagine what it's going to be like in the winter time? There's lots of info on the board if you search under D4D Thermostats and someone posted a video about replacing it here

Just called the garage I bought the car from who told me the blue light staying on is "normal for this engine"

I may have to name them soon

Hi long time since I've been on here, just wanted to let you know I had my head skimmed over 2 years now and it's running as good as it was before,

My avensis is a taxi and so it clocks up the milage as well as wear and tear,

The guy who did mine said he put the thickest gasket he could on the head,

Hope this helps someone who is thinking of getting the gasket done as Mr T fitted a new engine when it went the 1st time and made no difference as you can read in my earlier post.
