2.0 D4D Corolla Clocks Giving Trouble

Hello, I have a 2003 2 litre d4d corolla, the engine coolant temperature gauge needle never seems to move. I've checked the wiring on the temp sensor and carried out a repair on poorly joined wires, which wire do I connect to ground to check if the guage will move or not? The white or the blue?

Also, I've noticed just today that there's a delay of nearly 10 seconds or so after I start the car before the clocks start to repsond. Fuel gauge, rev counter, nothing responds and then they suddenly jump into life after a short delay. They used to respond the instant I turned on the ignition.

Has anyone else ever come across these faults?

Thanks.

common problem on the pre-facelift corolla when they get old the clocks start to stick. i don't know why but it happens a lot. easiest fix it to swap your clocks for a set from a breakers yard (and get odo recalibrated to your mileage) or to get a new set from the dealer, have those fitted and then get the mileage sorted.

Thanks corolla d4d. Will they work away if I don't change the mileage?? The car will probably never be sold, was bought for a family bus so I'll be driving her til she dies! I'll pick up a set of clocks anyway. Might be a stupid question but would a set from a petrol model work??

Thanks.

yes the clocks should work without calibrating the mileage however for MOT purposes and just for completness and lack of "confusion" if i can put it like that i'd have the mileage sorted. it's only a £20 job anyway...

petrol clocks wouldn't work because diesel red lines at 5K rpm ish, the petrol clocks redline would be somewhere closer to 7k rpm...
