3s-fze?

Hi everyone

Does anyone hear know anything about the 3S-FZE engine? All the sites we can find about it are in japanese and the online translators are diabolical lol

Only happened to discover there was such an engine by looking round on google (also found HKS parts for it).

Everyone seems to be going for the 3S-GTE engines in carinas, so the other half wants to be different, no matter what the cost lol :help:

If anyone knows anything, it would be great!

Thanks

Rach xx

I would suggest just typing 3S-GTE in a search engine. Yahoo, msn what ever. I found out a lot about my 1MZ-FE that way.

Tried already :crybaby:

Only sites with any info are japanese, and im yet to learn that lol

Theres shed loads about the 3S-GTE (already know the engine inside out anyway), but the 3S-FZE seems to be pretty anonymous

According to my data there is no such engine, I have listed 3sFE (Sports lean burn) which i have or 3fze-fe. Being a Carina your engine SHOULD be 3sFE.

I have just been informed by a Toyota contact that the 'Z' in FZE means 'Flat 6', and i've never known a Carina to have a flat six!! If your VIN plate says 3sFZE then apparently there is something dodgy going on! :) If you have a 3sFE then what woud you like to know?

Hello Rach,

Hope you are well. 3S-FZE? I have never heard of it. However there is the 3S-FSE though. It was Toyota's first direct injection petrol attempt and as far as I know, it was never exported outside Japan in other words, JDM. It was on Corona Premio models (ST21X) and auto only.

It had injection gumming problem but they managed to sort it out when they launched the current direct injection engine, the 1AZ-FSE.

Hiya!! Yeah im good ta, hope you're ok!

Funnily enough I was going to email you about this! We've also found a guy that imports toyotas so hes on the look out.

We've read a load of info on the 3S FSE and 1A-FSE, which we found on a jap site with some info about the 3S-FZE. Confuses hell out of me as we have a comprehensive list of all toyota engines (european, usa and jap releases) and theres no mention of it, yet why is HKS Japan making parts for it? lol

Im going to email HKS and ask if its just a typo on their site or not

Im fairly convinced there is no such 3S FZE engine, Nick just wants me to investigate for him lol

Jimma, we have the 3SFE engine as we have the 2.0 exec carina e, just Nick (the other half) was getting excited at the thought of a supercharged verion of his engine (this is the only circumstance that he'd change his engine lol)

Ill let you know what HKS say :D

The only supercharged Toyota engines are the 4A-GZE 1.6-litre 4-cylinder (Mk. I MR2, AE92/AE101 Corolla Levin GT-Z), the 1G-GZE 2-litre inline six (vast array of Crowns, Cressidas, Crestas, Chasers, etc.), and the 2TZ-FZE 2.4-litre 4-cylinder (Previa/Estima/Tarago). Of course, you could also count the TRD and TTE superchargers. Even then, I definitely agree with the general consensus that there was no 3S-FZE unless it was an aftermarket thing, in which case it would be considered a supercharged 3S-FE, not an FZE.

A Z in a Toyota engine code does not mean "Flat-6." Toyota has never produced a flat six, or any boxer engine for that matter, with the exception of the U-series found in the Publica minicar and S800 sports car. The Z in a Toyota engine code (applies AFTER the hyphen only, not before....) denotes a supercharged engine. A Z occuring before the hyphen simply means it's a recycled engine code letter (there was one with the same first letter before it, and is not related to the one with a Z).

The 155-bhp and 173-bhp Carina E engines were both 3S-GEs in varying states of tune.

The 3S-FSE and 1AZ-FSE are both 2-litre D-4 direct injection 4-cylinders. Both, as far as I know, were available on Avensis, and I think the 1AZ-FSE still is the sole 2.0 choice, but those of you in the UK could probably advise on this. The 2.4-litre D-4 2AZ-FSE can be found in the Avensis 2.4 model. Speaking of the 2AZ, is it true that the Camry has left the UK market?

I'm getting off topic, so I'll end this post. :bye:

Ok, Apologies, i CONCEDE that i was wrong, the Z purely means supercharged (when in the latter half of the code) but you are wrong that Toyota never produced a Flat Six, they produced !Removed! loads of 'em, heres a very small selection from Toyota USA.

Please.... PLEASE tell me you're joking.... God :help: us all...

ALL of those Toyota 6-cylinder engines you speak of are INLINE SIXES, plain and simple!!!!! The F-series, FZ series, JZ-series, M-series, the G-series, ALL of these are INLINE SIXES. You know, like, all of the cylinders are, like, in a LINE...

Now, I suppose you also think Celicas and Corollas had flat fours?

:rolleyes::wacko::lol:

My head is swimming with one-liners...

Well HKS say they have never produced anything for the 3S FZE engine and claim it may be a typo lol

Anywho, thats that out of the window

The 155 and 173bhp carinas were both 3S GE engines, the 3S GTE was famously in the celica GT4 and now the Caldina GT4, so they can be transplanted into carinas with the 3SFE and 3SGE engines (ask any of the guys on CEOC as theres a few doing it, or planning to do it lol)

Shame they never did that engine really, so many possibilities

Red, go and stand in pedants corner!! not everyones as clever as you, so why 'God help us all'?

I will do no such thing. It's a simple matter of common sense: Unless you know it for a fact, don't go around blatantly telling people they're wrong. I simply responded to your post with the same consideration with which you responded to mine.

The information is out there, it's up to you to find it.

'tis all in good fun. No rigid rules, just common courtesy... be open to new ideas..... instead of replying with "you're wrong", perhaps "I disagree", and offer something to the contrary.... People get on the defensive when you just tell them they're wrong...

But anyway, I'll lighten up if you do... perhaps my critical analysis class got to my head...

Hello everybody just joined the forum today.

I drive the Carina E GTi (3S-GE) 158 bhp.

But if I'm not mistaken in Japan they build a Carina with a turbo charged engine and 4WD? isn't that with the 3S-GTE engine?

Greetings from The Netherlands

Yes mate, you are absolutely right and I apologise. :) So what is the difference between an in line 6 and a flat 6. I always thought this meant the same thing?

Well I suppose that flat 6 could mean the same thing, but it usually denotes an engine with pistons facing opposite directions. I'm horrible at explaining these things.... basically, it's a V6 (two banks of three cylinders), but with 180 degrees (flat line) between the banks instead of the usual 60 or 90 degrees (and in some cases, 54 or 15 degrees). For illustrations, I found this site really helpful: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine5.htm

Very few manufacturers use these engines. Air-cooled Volkswagens, all Porsches (except the Carrera GT and the tank called the Cayenne), and Subarus use boxer fours and/or sixes. Toyota also made a boxer twin (the U-series) that was used in their S800 sports car and Publica minicar. There are probably others, too.

Honda use a Horizontally opposed 6 in the Goldwing, lol there another one for u. Not to mention practically any BMW motorbike uses a Boxer twin.

Oh and the Citreon 2CV uses a boxer twin.

Oh ok i'll shut up now :bye:
