High Pitch Squeaking Sound

Hello all.

First of all, nice to meet you. This is my first post here.

Now, the problem: i have a 2008 1.8 vvt-i Avensis with 30.000km on the clock for 1 month now and almost every day I get an irritating problem: a high pitch squeaking is coming from behind the steering wheel(steering column area, dials area). The sound is heard no matter the steering wheel position, movement(it can be heard if the steering wheel is not moved at all) at the smallest road bump.Did anyone else encountered this problem?

I had a noise which sounded as if coming from steering column area but driving along one day I rested arm against door window and it stopped.

Cured it by wiping silicone spray along door and window seals, always worth a go as often noises con be coming from no where near where you think.

I already tried that. I know about this possible cause from the car i had before, a Daewoo Matiz, which didn`t have the doors so tightly closed like the avensis has and once in a while this kind of squeaks were appearing. In conclusion, the door and window rubber seals are clean and wiped with silicone.

Also, i have pushed against all plastic things that i could reach to and nothing moves or nothing is producing the sound I am looking for. What could it be? It drives me nuts, especially because the car is very silent inside the cabin.

One other detail I remembered is that the squeaking never appeared when was raining or just after the rain stopped and the road is wet.

You say this occurs when driving all speeds ? We had the same kind of sound but was on the passenger side and on a different avensis model than the one we got now, we thought it was the wipers but could not find it, we was on the verge of taking it back to the dealers when my wife noticed the rubber door seal was ill fitting and was bent backwards slightly it sounded like a child blowing through a leaf whilst travelling, we tried to put the seal back but the rubber stayed in it position and a new one had to be fitted once fitted the noise disappeared, not saying this is your problem but worth a look at the door seals.

I have heard the sound up to 80-90km/h (50-55mph). At speeds greater than that i have never heard it(i do not know if that is due to the road noise or the noise is not produced anymore). I think that the sound can be heard especially at lower speeds because at these speed (up to 60-70km/h, 37-43mph) the car is moving about at road bumps and humps more that at speeds over 50-55mph. The noise is resembling with the typical wind noise but more likely with the made by expanded polystyrene foam rubbed against the hand or 2 pieces of expanded polystyrene foam rubbed one against the other.

When our car was at the dealers half hour of a job, they said the noise was most likely the side wind blowing past the door into cabin and created the whistle getting past the seal that we heard it got louder on motorways.

Unfortunately in my case the sound is nothing like a whistle sound, it`s like 2 things are rubbing one against the other and create that sound.

If it cant be heard in rainy conditions, it must be on the outside of the car.

Could be the window trim or similar.

Strangest think happened: yesterday afternoon i made a few trips into the city. In all of them the nerve wracking sound was present at every move of the car. Before the last trip, the one home, i was waiting outside the car for somebody, having the driver`s door opened fully. Having nothing to do I started pushing against the side of the dashboard, on the two pieces of plastic(the rubbery one from the top and the hard one in the lower part of the dash). On my way home i noticed that the squeaking could not be heard anymore. Same story this morning, on my way to the job: silence in the car. It is possible that i have found the source of the squeaking sound, although when i pushed against the plastics no sound could be heard.

I didn`t find out what was causing the sound but it stopped right after inflating the tyres from 2.0 bars to 2.2 bars(i didn`t know that they had low pressure in them).
