Hi people, need some advice please on brakes, on my 1998 rav4 4 door manual, have started getting what seems like about three slight grinding pulses when braking, but only start to feel it when i get down to about 20mph. Have had wheels off found the caliper slide pins seized, have freed them off recopper greased them, pads are like new, discs look fairly new also, put back together still doing it,any ideas on what may be the cause......Thanks

It slounds like run out or disc thickness variation (DTV). If you jack each one up and turn the wheel you may be able to look at the gap between the pads and the discs. They will be stiff to turn and you need to chock it safely. A high spot might also be indicated by discolouration or darkening of the disc.

I have checked thickness and there fine, also checked for run out /high spots also fine ,have read there could be problem with rings on cv joints for abs pick up,fells like when your in snow and you can feel abs kickin in

Good evening... if the front brakes are checking out fine then maybe the abs sensors are picking up the wrong message. Both of my RAVs don't have abs, altho the Previa has. I've read a fair bit about the abs that seems to kick in when its really not needed.

I'd probably start at checking that the sensor ring is intact and the sensor is ok. Clean the lot.

Where about in the world are you ???

With that explanation - yes there could be or even grit on a sensor end. You can't always see the ring without stripping but I had a similar problem on a Kia Picanto recently and you could see the broken one easily. It was about £15 for a new one - just had to detach the drive shaft from the front hub.
