2009 1.8 Valvematic Or Diesel Engine

Hi All

In the process of looking for a new car which might just be a 2009> Toyota Avensis. I was originally considering a 2.0 or 2.2 diesel engine for economy reasons but having read a few reviews the 1.8 petrol engine nearly always gets recommended. In the Honest John review he goes as far as to say that the 1.8valvematic and CVT combination is a better drive than any of the diesels and would be his choice. I will be doing about 700miles per month for business as well which will mean I would travel anywhere i'm required in the country, is the 1.8 petrol lacking in torque, I must admit I hate the slow response of my current petrol mazda when coming off motorway roundabouts.

Please can all 1.8 owners or anyone who has experienced the engine give me some feedback please.

I also like the fact that the petrol has less problems (no egr, dpf, DMF) etc and the service intervals are longer.

Any opinions welcome.

Thanks

Mark

1.8 V-matic is very smooth and linear for torque, It obviously wont feel as quick at low revs as a diesel but that is made up with more power being up in the rev range, The petrol is more fun to drive when you are in the mood and the new V-matic engine mated with the CVT gearbox gives excellent fuel economy when cruising at a constant speed.

Note that many people do not actually realise but the 1.8 V MATIC actually gets exactly the same (51.4mpg) on the non urban cycle when compared to the 2.2 diesel with an automatic and the petrol is alot quieter than the diesel. From experience of the 1.6 V MATIC its actually inaudible when idling from inside. Its also cheaper to insure, cheaper to buy and should be cheaper on maintenance costs, so Im sure the 1.8 V MATIC is the same when it is basically the same engine block.

The Valvematic system is designed to give more torque at a lower point, and the combination with the CVT will mean that when coming onto a motorway the gearbox will select a ratio with optimum power for acceleration. The Auris I drove with a 1.6 V MATIC was a lot better than the old 1.6 vvti in older COROLLA:)

The AVENSIS should see the same difference :)

Hope that helps :)

Is this actually the car though??? Comparing the figures the diesel is not much faster and not much more economical? I can understand the torque being higher though being a diesel.

I must admit i'm attracted by the 1.8 reliability but don't want to be dissapointed with the engine.

Thanks

Mark
