Lighter Flywheel

Has anyone had their flywheel machined and how much did they take off?

How did it affect their performance and economy?

Also with an alloy flywheel ..does that increase fuel consumption a lot?

Does anyone know the weights of standard and alloy flywheels?

Machining your standard flywheel is a waste of time. You need to invest in a lightweight aluminum flywheel like a Findaza.

Fuel consumption will probably go up and also the gearbox/drivetrain will become more noisy.

It will not add horsepower, it will just allow your engine to rev up faster.

Machining is not my preferred option

There is a group in Australia that make billet aluminium flywheels

and also from chromoly and billet steel, both of which are made 15 to 20% lighter than your standard flywheel

which is probably what I will go for

I forgot to mention, you may need to raise your idle to around 900rpm otherwise with a lightweight flywheel you're engine may stall when coming to a stop as there isnt enough enertia to keep the crank spinning. Its a common problem with lightened flywheels although i've never experienced it myself having never bothered with a lightweight flywheel.

Fiting a lighter flyweel will reduce engine torque in the low rpm range - thus worse mpg in during urban driving.

Also you may have to increase the idle speed otherwise the engine will tend to stall easliy plus lightened flywheels will allow more vibration to the transmission system thus shortening its life-span.

This is one mod I´m planning to do. Standard flywheels usually are around 10 kg´s and some lightweight ones as low as 3-4 kg´s. I´ve already fitted a lightweight crankpulley. A UK carmagazine once changed the mentioned items on an old Subaru Impreza and got a faster car. Honda shaved off 0,2 seconds 0-60 just by fitting a lightened flywheel to the Civic (otherwise same car).

We have chromoly ones here 25% lighter and alloy ones. At 0.2 it hardly seems worth it for the extra gas consumption

I might just save up for a Nos and get a lighter hatch and tank.

I was researching a lighter crank pulley, but decided not too as there was talk of it disturbing th eengine harmonics

What have you noticed?..in power?

Dont go changing your underpulley..I heard it makes your lights dim when you throttle off!
