Nokia Car Kit Removal

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I bought my 2004 Avensis a couple of days ago. It has a nokia car kit installed. The phone cradle is attached to a metal plate that protrudes from the side of the radio/heater facia, the control button is fitted to the gear lever facia and the wiring disappears under it.

I'd like to remove the nokia kit as the beep it makes every time you start the car with no phone in the cradle is annoying, I will never use the kit, and it just makes the car look like a salesmans motor.

The facias all seem very well 'stuck down' and I can't immediately see a way to get them shifted without damaging something.

Any help much appreciated

Well, the instructions above imply that with the gear knob removed, the panel surrounding it will lift off - err, no it doesn't

I recently stripped down this section of dash on my car to repair heater knob bulbs and if I recall correctly had the same dilemma. However after several tries the trim did come off. I think I pulled it upwards using the ashtray housing.

The trim comes off very easily in an Avensis, once the gearknob is removed the whole trim around the gearstick gaiter will unclip lift upwards, then it's just a case of removing the four screws holding the radio/AC unit in.

Job done.

1. Unscrew gear knob

2. Remove silver trim around base of gear lever cover

3. pop gear lever cover down in front of gear lever, to get fingers under the trim panel

4. pull up and back to get panel off

5. Undo plug at the back of the ashtray/cigarette lighter

6. Starting at passenger side, pull the long thin trim panel off (at the centre of the car it contains the drinks holder and alarm indicator)

7. Remove plug from the back of the panel

8. Undo the 4 10mm bolts holding the radio and heater control panel in place, 2 above and 2 below.

9. Undo plugs from back of radio.

10. trace all the wiring for phone cradle and control pad, remove cradle, control pad, hidden control box, extra speaker.

11. pull courtesy light panel gently to give access to microphone cable, cut and tuck cable out of sight.

12. locate power feed, in this case wired into the 12v cigarette lighter feed, cut and insulate the remaining wire.

13. locate stereo feed, in this case a single wire leading to one of the plugs at the back of the stereo. Cut and insulate remaining wire

14. locate mobile arial, unplug, trace wire back to within trim, cut.

15. Put it all back together!!

:D

Now, how to get rid of the arial fitting on the glass of the back window... it's well stuck in place and won't shift.... :hammer:

This is great! I have one in my car and now I'm going to remove it also. One question, once I do this the radio isnt going to start asking for the code or anything is it?

Can't say for certain, but mine certainly didn't, although it wasn't disconnected for very long at all.

all I can tell you is that mine was for an older style Nokia, but since pretty much every mobile has a car kit for sale for it, it's impossible to say ;)

mine had this installed as well. i simply removed the hardware and terminated the cut off wire ends to tidy them up and tucked them out of the way, shame its old tech and cant be used with newer phones but my htc works a treat in its own cradle as a phone and very good sat nav so im not too worried,
