Dashboard Warning Lights/speedo

Hi

Looking for a wee bit of help/information. At present, over the last day or so the vsc, anti skid and engine management lights have come on. And a few miles later the speedo stopped working.

The last time I had this problem it happened to be the sunroof letting water in(drivers side) and it was tracking down the c pillar, behind the dash and on to the relays/fuses just above the footwell. The sunroof was adjusted to cure the leak and the wiring, carpet etc was dried out with a hairdryer. This fixed all the faults, including the speedo. I thought I may have the same problem again due to all the heavy rain we have been having, but have checked the sunroof and all is well. I have checked up under the dash etc and it's bone dry?? .

At a loss to what may the problem may be this time? They must all have a common connection, assuming in the area of the drivers footwell?? Has anyone experienced this or got a drawing of some sort to suss out whats going on. The warning lights may be resetable? but unsure about the speedo

Any help/info again appreciated.

Jason

Is the footwell carpet dry ?

From memory, there is a multiplug somewhere near the Battery that gets gunged up. It just requires cleaning.

Hi Bothwell,Anchorman

So far i have got all the passenger/drivers side trim/panels removed under the dash and along the doors shuts. I have pulled up the carpets to make sure water hasn't sneaked down unnoticed and it's all dry. I have checked all the multiplugs and fuses and look ok. That's about as far as i've got due to working 12hr shifts over the last 4 days.

I will venture under the bonnet today and look at this multiplug you have suggested anchorman, because about 1mth ago i replaced the car Battery (upgraded to a diesel size) and may have moved/dislodged something??. I can't remember seeing any multiplugs in that area though?

I found a wee bit of info regarding the workings of this system in other forums. Apparently if you lose the signal from the speedo, this can bring on the engine managment light and the vsc.(meant to be safety related and it turns the system off). But with mine it all happened the other way round with the vsc first then about 10mins later engine light then a few miles after that the speedo died.

Still open to suggestions, I will have a look at the speedo sensor when i suss out it's location (usually gearbox/flywheel) and check multiplugs/earths and anything else that springs to mind. I'll keep u posted if I find out the problem.

Cheers

Jas

The speedo sensor plug on the gearbox can give problems. Usually a clean up and squirt with WD40 cures it. Before you dig too deep for that plug, it is the main one for the wiring harness and could be away from the Battery so just have a hunt round first.

Worth checking the connections that were affected by the previous water ingress - as they may have corroded a bit by now....a shoogle about and a wee bit of WD40 might help.

good luck.++++++++++

There is a product that I was steered towards many Years ago called Dielectric grease .. Its brilliant stuff for making a permanent fix to rouge connectors or multi-plugs. I use it a lot on My Jet ski which goes into a hostile environment.. Much better than WD ..........

Hi

Just for info I have now got all lights out on the dash and speedo working.

I checked all multi plugs first(in the footwell and engine bay, took car for a drive still no speedo/ all dash lights still on.

I then removed speedo plug and gave terminals a wee clean(they weren't bad to be honest). Took the car for a spin. Speedo now working, dash lights still on. I put most of the car together and had arranged to get the VSC/Engine lights reset via a OBD2 reader. On my way to my mates garage, after approx 10m all the lights reset by themselves.

In a way i hate it when that happens(don't know what the problem is/was). Plugging in the code reader revealed no codes(nothing stored). I would have thought if there had been a problem it would have stored something regardless if it had cleared or not?? All very strange

Anyway touchwood it won't happen again, hoping it was just the speedo sensor plug?

Thanks for all the advice

Jas
