Strange Noise When Accelerating

Over the past few days I have noticed a strange noise, predominantly when accelerating. I believe this noise to be coming from under the bonnet. The noise can best be described as being similar to that when a piece of paper comes into contact with a desk fan and that of a helicopter blade rotating.

When I take my foot off the accelerator, more often than not, the sound goes away although this is not true on all occasions. When the engine is idling at traffic lights, it sounds normal.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello, check the air filter housing as this is known to cause a problem like you describe, I heard it said that a piece of foam rubber in the right place will cure it. I have not had this problem myself but i'm sure someone will tell you exactly where .

Regards Pete.

Yep, it sounds like it could be the intake pipe to the airbox. If you pop the lid off, remove the airfilter element and check whether the intake pipe (below the filter element) is secure that should isolate the problem for you.

Thanks for all the advice. I haven't looked at the airbox in detail yet due to time. I have noticed the sound today when I have been idle in traffic. I've convinced Toyota to take a look for me, free of charge as I pointed out that you guys think its the air filter. They wanted to charge me £80 for the priviledge but if it is the air filter, they will look for free.

Thanks again

Took my car to Toyota yesterday for a quick check. The technician said it sounded like a bearing but he couldnt be sure whether its the wheel bearings or the gearbox bearings. What I have noticed is that putting the car into neutral as I am cruising along makes the noise go away so I am leaning towards the gearbox.

Its going to cost me approx £275 for Toyota to fix the problem so I'm going to go to a small independant and get a price from them just to see what the difference is and decide then who will do the work.

I had my gearbox synchros reco'd and my mechanic replaced all the bearings with German SKF Needle Roller Bearings. His reasoning was that the Toyota ones arent that good and the German ones are the same price but better quality.
