Fuel Smell In Engine Bay On 54 Plate D4D

Hi All,

Hope someone can advise me. I have a 54 plate avensis D4D tourer and I have a fuel smell

in the engine bay. There must be a very small diesel seepage as the car returns 50+ mpg

ave.

I have noticed when I remove the engine covers that there is some oily pools in the 4 hollows

just under what I think are the glow plug connectors just under where the injector feeds are.

These is a large silver coloured manifold type of thing between the common rail and the glow

plug connectors. Is this part of the fuel system.

Has toyota recalled any of these D4D's for fuel leaks in the past?

As i say it must only be a very small seep otherwise my economy would be worse.

May have to take it to garage as I want it to be safe but I've driven without problems for

a while. Other than the smell when I park up. It doesn't get into the cabin.

Just to add. If I run the engine and look around there is no evidence of leaking

dripping or anything. I guess the front lower oart of the engine seems oily

on the outside in parts around the area below the starter motor.

hi mate

firstly you should cllean all points of pipes connections and find those problem spot. hopefully it will be necessary to re-tight it (only when the engine is stopped). Be sure the pools under the valve cover are oil pools -- if wise then inspec fuel joints on the possible leak.

Hi again,

I was changing over front discs and pads today so stripped the engine covers off

after I'd done it and looked around. The common rail looks damp at the right hand

end and so does the stuff below it so maybe there is a seepage here.

Is the right had side of the common rail as you look at the engine part of the fuel

return. There is a sensor or something screwed into the end of the common rail here

and it seems to be this junction where the seepage may be but its tough to get to

Maybe a job for my local garage if no one can offer me a tip to tightening this.

Thanks

Steve

hello again

you can do this job -- the only matter is to source the same raw material O-gasket. If no you can screw the pressure sensor off and to apply a teflon tape on the sensor tip thread to seal it when screwed in. Before doing that you must to be sure the pressure is rail is not available. Good Luck

Hello, I agree with Igor and here is a .pdf file of the fuel system for the diesel and petrol engines which may come in handy.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi All,

Thanks for all the helpful advice on this.

I eventually took it into my local independent as I was worried about the high pressure

diesel situation.

Anyway they diagnosed a fractured pipe between the No.3 injector and fuel rail. This was

replaced along with the seals and all is well at long last. No fule leaks, no smell and

mpg up about 10% to around 53mpg average.

Was billed just £50 for the part and an hoiurs labour so well happy.

Thanks again

Steve
