Hi Folks,

Just joined the site. Seems to be a great place for info for the Rav4.

I'm from Ireland and just bought a 2005 1.8vvti 5dr 2wd Rav4 for my other half.

Here's a pic...

:)

I was looking for info on a HID light conversion for it, and came across this brochure.

TTE Brochure

Seems to be a nice set of headlights available for the 4.1, but nothing for the 4.2. But it might be of use to someone!

Cheers

Ciaran

Hi Ciaran,

and a big welcome to the TOC RAV 4 section. I'm unsure about Eire, but here in the UK you are only allowed to fit HID conversions if they conform to very strict design and testing regulations. The fitting of HID bulbs to the existing headlamps is not allowed and a check will become part of the annual "MOT" test later this year. Having tried HID bulbs and found out what a difference they make, I wish that I could find a "legal" kit for my 4.3. The search has been fruitless so far as the headlamps have to be made to follow the car steering ( using servo motors ) and have washers fitted. This is a fairly major engineering job and I can't see anyone taking it on for what would be a fairly small market. Be interesting to see if the 4.4 has HID as standard. Good luck!

about the hids thats a myth.....i have spoke to vosa about this(i have hids fitted to all my cars and so do my mates and i mot them) on many occasions the can not and do not know how to make this part of the test and if they do it will be a visual test to look for the balasts.......ie you cant see them you cant fail them comes in to play...mine are hidden under my headlights..

I am not familiar with UK regs regarding retro fitting HIDs. Here in Ireland, they can be retro fitted (for the moment). Personally I would not fit them to non projector headlights as they look too 'boyracer'.

Well, VOSA and their lords and masters at DfT should make sure their advice is consistent.

Duncs pointed out this statement on the Dfa site a while back. They consider conversion kits essentially illegal. As three5 as stated they need to be type approved and the approval requirement would dictate a fair amount of addition modifications to an existing vehicle.

construction and use is diff from mot and thats the links you have put up.im not saying they are not looking into it but they dont know how to make it part of the test due to it being too expensive and they recon it will be years before it will happen..

You may think differently of you read the VOSA (May 2011) magazine publication - see link below.

One tester I know suspects a light brightness test will be introduced - in other words they'll use a light meter - in fact some headlight testing equipment already has such a facility.

not as simple as using a light meter as hids and normal bulbs look almost the same when on the light meter as long as you have your hids correctly alighned.

i tend not to read these little books i just ask vosa direct.. stuff like that has been in the books for as long as ive been a tester
