Old Cars.

on one of the forums someone posted that old cars were rubbish, which of course they were not.the did not fail every five mins.they were very easy to maintane, and cheap do so.yes they needed shorter service intervals.

you could get

ignition parts at almost every petrol forecourt.plugs were it seemed always 5 shillings (25 p).

why i brought this subject up is cos i was in my local sainsburys car park when up rolled a Alvis drophead (1960) sports model in a red simuler to the ferrari red.it was draw dropping lovely. Avis did not make their own bodywork but done by coachwork specialists.but the owner told me he done he bodywork himself.i wish i had my camera with me,but the owner said he lived local to me (though i never seen the car before)so i will keep the cmera in the car just in case i see it again.

cars these days dont look anything as eye catching as some of the earlier ones did,and many models look the same.not much streamlining either.

as the Alvis left the carpark with many people watching it,the exhaust note was a lovely deep burble.

as it drove away i thought how i would love to own it,i would just keep it in the garage and look at it.would not want to chance parking it in a car park.to buy a decent Alvis these days your talking about £70000.i cant go 70p at the moment.

excuse the ramblings of a silly old Fa*t

Back in the days cars were built to be as good as possible, and last as long as possible. - then along came the mid 90s and the manufactureres realsied that well made cars will stop people buying new cars in as high volumes, so combined with a fair bit of penny pinching accountancy to push profitability up pretty much everything took a nose dive.

I have grown up around old cars as my father is a bit of a collector. Most new cars are not even painted properly!

As for reliability, I don't thnk it is as much of an issue as people make out, as long as you avoid tat (GM or ford, or Anything Rover etc)

My old man has a car from '63 that until an idiot mechanic wrecked the HT leads on a service has never let hom down in about 15 years of ownership, he even drove it to and back from Germany.

My 80s 635CSi has 240,000 miles on it and was still going strong! masively well built "over engineered" cars!
