Airbag Light With Code B1188

Hello. I know there's few of these topics already, but I couldn't find a solution from any of them...

So the problem is: Airbag's light turned on in the middle of driving, just like that. I went to a nearby place to have a look with the scanner, ending up with code B1188 which indicates to passanger's airbag malfunction or shortcut in wiring.

After some research thru internet, I decided to remove the front seats and go thru the connections down there. No help.

Naturally I disconnected the Battery and waited some 10 mins, like each time I've been playing with airbags.

Well, bad thing. So I took the car to local Toyota service, they inspected it for two hours and coudn't find anything. Still they were able to charge me 127 euros.. The last thing, they said, is to change to passanger's airbag. Sparepart and work -> abt 1100 euros. I was hyperventilating some time and said I need to think this over.

I bought a used airbag from a discharged car, put it on but the damn light is still on. I just don't believe anymore the problem is with the airbag's, it's something else.

Now, the real question here is: Where to look next? What connections should I go and check, and how much voltage should I be able to see with meter?

Or is there any other things I ought to consider?

Did a quick search on the web for B1188 code, and found this.

It's for the 2003 corolla, but suppose it applies to most toyotas from that era.

I'm also attaching the SRS wiring diagram for your vehicle.

Also, make sure the airbag connectors are fully pressed together, as there

apparently is a shorting connector inside, to short circuit the ignition system in the

airbag, when it is disconnected from the vehicle.

Aww... I didn't even know there's a connector inside of the connectors. So, I better be careful when pressing them back. I'm planning go thru all the wires and connectors, but one more question: If I somehow by accident manage to find something and fix it, will the light go down by itself? Or do I have to have a code reader with me to kill the light?

Thanks!

I guess disconnecting the Battery for a while will clear the codes.

But then again, you'll have to do that anyways, when fiddling with the srs system.

EDIT ///

Not 100% sure the codes will be reset on srs by disconnecting the Battery.

Maybe you need an obd device, or could reset by connecting two of the terminals

with a short wire.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally the problem is solved. It was airbag's central unit malfunction, had to change the whole damn thing. Ridiculously cheap... Well, at least the car is in condition now.

Thanks to everyone who were helping!
