Guys..... I am doing a little early research as my car is due for a change soon.

I would like to buy a relacement, new, Avensis and it must be an automatic.

How many of you would own a 2.2 diesel?

Given that the car would be new and have a 5 year warranty would owning a 2.2 Avensis be a bad move? I would certainly replace it before it reached 5 years old.

Get the 2.0 V Matic ..I have to admit the CVT gearbox (automatic is quite annoying cause its onlyone gear) But the engine is incredibly quiet free revving and quite torquey.

Even though I've had a rebuild of my 2.2 oil burner twice! I'd still have the 2.2 engine as it pulls like a train and very quiet in the cab. More fun when you've got a tuning box belting out over 200bhp! Big fun... Oh yes :yahoo::driving::naughty:

In my country when the questions is "Avensis with automatic gearbox", the most common advice is 1.8 vvti auto. But this is because most of the people choosing an Avensis Automatic here, are driving mostly in the city (school driver, shopping) and 1 or 2 times a year out for a vacation (and all this in less than 10 000miles/year, mostly around 7 000miles). I'm not saying the 2.2 d4d is bad, just the opposite. Choosing a car engine wisely it's not easy, its just a complex desicion based on driving style, driving expectations, driving distance, location (mainly for the winter period and are the winter temperatures really low), miles/year, initial price, will the car be used with a trailer or other kind of large luggage (ski, bike and outside luggage carriers), taxes....

if youre going to sell the 2.2 before the warranty is up go for it , if you where thinking of keeping it out of warranty go for the 2.0 ,,, 2.2 great poke but prone to common mechanical faults that can be very pricey out of warranty

my 2.2 has never missed a beat, serviced by me from new,now on 56k, the only minor niggle is cleaning the egr out regularly and it gets done every 10k. fuel economy is good for a big car. And it can still surprise others with its poke, pretty naff off the line but once she's going she surprises most boy racers. i put a bottle of zx1 in the oil last week and it's quietened it down no end, am now averaging 47-48 miles to the gallon on long trips, not mind blowing but i live in germany and most of my miles are on the autobahn at 100+ mph. i think thats pretty good!!!
