Went thru a 'puddle' today. Turned out to be a rather deep flood. Water went straight in thru the air intake. Wouldnt even turn over. Green flag guy reckons the whole engine has seized. Not happy.

Insurance company called. Should be covered. Might be a right off tho!!!

Will keep the forum posted.

Sad day... :(

I'm not sure how deep it was. Certainly wasn't over the bumper or anything. Was maybe doing about 30. I was very surprise myself to be honest. I'm a bit puzzled about it all.

maybe just hydraulic lock and just needs drained out and cleaned? One of the downsides of where they put the air intake.

You are covered by Your insurance for damage of this kind as it was accidental.. Unless You were off road of course.. ????

Insurance claim in and all is ok on that front. Its with mr T for diagnoses. Anyone selling a Rav???

The more I think about it the more weird it is. I've been thru bigger puddles in smaller cars ad never had a problem. I wonder if the wheel arch casing was loose so the water just shot past it. How else could that much water have gotten thru? It wasn't deep enough that the air intake was under water. Your talking 1 foot max!!!

Anyways. We'll see what happens!!

maybe just a freak accident then.

Ok here's an update... brace yerself...

(DISCLAIMER: Some terminaology might be wrong cos i'm a numpty!)

Current diagnoses is

Bent crankshaft

Bent conrods

Block partially seized

Possible turbo damage

Cylinder 1 was full of water, 2 partial and so on...

They said the cold water hitting the inside of hte hot engine, caused it to seize. obviously water doesn't compress which bent the conrods. The engine stopping to abrubtly bent the crackshaft...

Quote: "There is definately terminal damage in the engine" !!!

The car needs to go up on the ramps to have the sump taken off so they can get into it properly however predicted costs are:

New engine £7500, turbo £1500. Bit of labour taking it to £11k - £12k....

:ffs: :ffs: :ffs: :ffs:

These cars are sold in countries that have monsoons and tropical storms. Something must have gone badly wrong to suck up so much water..............

Totally agree. I asked Mr T and he basically said that the water can easily find it's way into such places as this. I did add that I thought it odd that so much water would get through. He just said that that's what happens.

Personally I think something was not right about it. Whether it was the wheel arch plastic protector bit being loose that let the water in or something random like the pipe being disconnected which meant the air was being drawn from the engine bay which can get wet in such circumstances.. who knows...

Totally gutted tho. I absolutely loved that car...

The cold water thing is bllx. It is water that stops the engine because it won't compress.

Unless something is adrift it sounds like really bad luck. The intake is tucked away behind the bonnet slam panel near the Battery.

As I said before I have been thorugh bigger puddles with smaller cars (Fiat Punto) and never had a problem... In my younger days I used to speed up for puddles!!!

Mt T is ripping it apart today so we should find out the full extent of the damage later.

Well ladies and gentlemen, it is with great sadness that Kevin (my wife named it, ok!!) has passed away and will be laid to rest on Friday...

The engine was gonna cost the best part of £11k. The insurance company only fix up to 60% of the value of the car so they've written it off...

So what do you do with an immaculate Rav 4 with no engine?? I'm sorely tempted to buy it back and drop another second hand engine in her. If she does go to scrap i want my new disk brakes, tyres, etc back too...

Anyone got any steel wheels???

Here's some photos for your enjoyment..

If you can find a sound engine and a reliable garage to fit it you could do a lot worse. I suspect you could come out on top...................

Buy it back and put another engine in it

You wont be able to strip all the parts off it before it goes, you will end up with a bill off the insurance company. When they make you an offer on the value of the car, it will be for the car AS IS, not with brakes and tyres stripped off it

Kingo

sad one this,do you try and get hold of a decent second-hand engine or walk away.If we are led to believe with a lot of the problems the 2006 onwards engines are having it makes you wonder if you can source an half decent one anyway!!!!Best of luck

Aww man, my sympathies :(

It's a bit worrying tho'; Water should not get into the air intake that easily!

I'm gutted for you mate! When something like this happens to you're pride and joy over a bit of water its just heart breaking. I'd see if I could buy it back for a good price off the insuranc and take a look for an engine, maybe off eBay ect...

I had the same thing happen to me back in 1992 with a Citroen 1.9 ZX Turbo! The air filter inlet was at the bottom of the engine (Stupid French design) and I went through a puddle (An it was a very small one an all!) and it sucked up the water and that as they say was that! The non-turbo engine had the inlet at the top of the engine so it never suffered from these problems.

But I also remember when Citroen were equally as stupid with the handbrake on the Xantia that worked off the from brakes! So when it was left on a hill and the front discs cooled down and contracted the handbrake would slip and your car was down the hill in to the river! Best place for them an all! :lol2:

Thats why I'd never by French again in my life because they just dont think of the most sensible stuff

Can they explain how the water got in?

Nothing more than they said earlier I'm afraid. Just that water easily finds it's way into places like that. Got to be honest I don't think he really knew.
