Checks For Turbo For Avensis Verso

Hi,

I was advised by Mr T to change turbo because of low power. Should there be any checks before replacing turbo. This is 2001 D4d with 1K miles on the clock. Recently serviced and air and fuel filter changed. EGR valve cleaaned. I just want to know that before undertaking turbo replacement, could there be simple things which are not letting turbo kick in?

Thanks very much.

Hi Noman,

Yes there are a number of things that can stop a Turbo creating boost, I would check that the wastegate is,nt jammed open, this will be found on the exhaust side of the Turbo and will have an actuator arm attached to it, you should be able to move the actuatorarm back and forth, they are usually stiff but can be moved, among other things to check are the large rubber hoses leading to the intercooler! making sure they are not damaged or off their fittings, also check for a faulty dump valve! to do a rough test you could remove the hose from the inlet side of the intercooler and run the engine up and blip the throttle up to around 3k revs and you should hear a loud whoosh, if you do hear it then reconnect the pipe and remove the exit pipe from the intercooler and do the same, if you still hear the whoosh then the intercooler is clear, If you dont hear a whoosh at any point and the wastgate moves ok then I would be inclined to go for the Turbo.

Hope you get to the bottom of your problem.

Regards

Alf
