Strange Noise Wehn Steerining At Very Low Speeds

Hi All,

First I should let You all know that My car is an: X plate (2000) 1.8GS Avensis.

I have a very strange noise coming from My steering when I'm turning the wheel at Low speeds (i.e. parking in a tight spot).

It's a cross between a metalic grinding & a high pitched squeeling ... It's really, really, really annoying.

I've always done my own work on My cars & I restore classic cars for a hobby (when My health allows Me to) BUT I've NEVER heard anything like this before.

It's only for a small part of the lock & only one way (I can't remember if it's when I'm turning the wheels to the left or the right when the noise kicks in).

Any idea's ????? :help:

Also when I rev the car out of gear it is slightly delayed from when I press the accelerator pedal and also slightly delayed shutting down after i release the pedal as well.

Any Idea's on that ????? :help:

My Dad who has the same car, (Avensis 1.8GS) only His is on a 52 Plate (2002), has got a problem with His boot filling up with Water, Especially on the drivers side.

Can anyone shed some light on where to look for that ????? :help:

I have checked his rear light cluster & there is NO water in there.

Cheers,

Aaron.

Hi,

Both faults you mention are common to the Avensis and the solutions are mentioned elsewhere in this forum. Firstly the noisy steering, I had this some years ago and Mr T changed the steering rack but in another reply a guy said you can buy a special grease for this problem. It seems that at the point where the steering column goes through the bulk head is where the noise comes from. You could just try a squirt of WD 40 and it might do the trick.

I’ve had a leak on my 02 model with the boot filling with water but with no sign of entry near the light cluster. There is a welded seam under the plastic strip on the roof, others have said remove this and re-seal it. That seemed a lot of trouble, so on a hot day I run some Supertrol 001 along the strip. Supertrol is similar to Waxoil and I’ve seen it for sale on the net. The assumption I made was if water can penetrate a seam so can a water displacement (WD) product so perhaps WD 40 might also work. It fixed my leak. I think it is best done when the car is hot and the seam has had some time to dry out.

Give it a go.

I haven't had the time to look at the steering column noise yet (We are in the process of moving house at the moment), but I WILL post up the results when I do get round to it.
