i know my hatch hinges are ok cos i just looked at them yesterday and was thinking of giving them a drop of oil.

The paintwork on Toyotas in general is very thin, bodywork scratch easy but havent seen any rust yet.

Is the paint on Toyotas is very thin! can you explain why, is it thicker on other makes? does Toyota paint scratch easier than other makes? is this to save money because you perceive Toyota to be a cheaply made car?

Thats normal!

Even a 2011 plate car will have that regardless of what make and model thats because of the weather or more the rain getting into such places. If your realy worried just grease it.

Normal - my a$$ - excuse the Royle family quote.

The paint coat on these areas is just too darned thin - take it back and kick up merry stink.

My son drives a 1994 Clio and there is no rust whatsoever - a few dings maybe but no rust. If a 17 year old car can withstand the elements it doesn't say much about Toyotas paint or spraying quality - now does it.

Yes Keith you are right to be concerned. Go to your dealer and complain ASAP.

All in all I don't think thin paint could be a main problem.

What I think, probably, in some cars it could be a problem in galvanizing process.

In my Corolla, before buying the new Auris I never had any rust issue, and I had some paint scratch in the hood caused by little stones and never treated with paint or anything else!

So, paint is relative when we talk about rust.

I remember a BMW 3 series of a friend of mine with a huge rusty area on the driving door and they repaired under warranty.

So, I'm sorry but no, it's NOT normal!
