Problem With 1.0 Gs Yaris 1999 Freetronic

Hi folks

Hope someone can please offer some much appreciated advice on my other halfs 1.0 GS freetronic yaris.

The problem first happened when my other half was at a roundabout and tried to go off in 1st gear but it was slipping and revving so she had to go into 2nd gear to get the car going. She managed to drive it to a garage, when she tried to start the car to go home, the car would not start. She got the car jump started and all the gears including first were now fine.

She then went home took the Battery out and put it on charge over night. This morning she put the Battery back in and the car started first time. However the engine management light (which she has ignored for the past 6 weeks) had disappeared. She ended up driving it to a specialist garage today in Rayleigh and they said they could fix the clutch for £350 but it would more than likely not solve the problem. It could be the modulator connected to the clutch and that would cost £1500 his advice was not to take the risk and to get rid of the car.

Now I know this clutch modulator is in fact called the clutch actuator and if that needs replacing then she might aswell scrap the car.

I found this interesting snippet from the honest john site: On Freetronic models, loss of automatic clutch system fluid via the accumulator seals can cause total loss of gear selection. Not monitored by warning light. New one costs £344 + fitting. Owners advised to check reservoir level regularly. People have been told the automatic actuator is faulty and it needs a new ECU costing £1,500.

My question to all you wise and kind folks on here is how can I tell if her clutch actuator has gone? The freetronic warning light has never come on in her yaris only the engine management light.

Thanks to everyone reading this.

P.S. I checke her coolant level and it is on minimum. Haven't seen any signs of leakage from it.

Sorry Nick.. I think you will struggle to find anyone with any knowledge of them.

(Says he: and someone then answers with details :-)

Thanks for replying madasafish.

I think you are right but I live in hope

I would say to anyone reading this thread now (even if its like a year later) do not buy a freetronic yaris as they always go wrong.

Stick to auto or manual.

I feel partly responsible as I told my other half to buy the yaris as I have had my t-sport yaris for years and that has mostly been reliable.

If anyone does have any ideas if its the clutch actuator gone or just the accumulator seals please let me know or if your not sure could you please tell me what the symptons of either fault would normally be.

I would really appreciate any advice from fellow members as she really doesnt want to have to part with her yaris.

thanks in advance
