Will the BG244 do its job?

  1. 1. What condition will the EGR valve be in after the BG244?

    • clean as a whistle!!

    • mostly clean - no clogging
    • cleaned a bit - still signs of clogging
    • noticeably cleaned - but still clogged
    • nothing (not cleaned at all)

I would suggest that anyone wanting to clean the EGR using BG244 removes the EGR and soaks it in the stuff. Personally I would use a carb cleaner as it is cheaper and easier to use.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well boys and girls the experiment is over!!!

1 full can of BG244 and regular shell fuelsave later i can reveal that the BG244 did........

absolutely nothing!

Antecedo, good effort with the experiment. I'd never heard of this BG44 / 244 product but went on their website to check it out.

They do make alot of claims on there, one of which and I quote "A Clogged EGR System?"

Are you going to e-mail them for a refund? I would, as a bitterly dissapointed customer. :lol2:

I run V-Power diesel all the time and cleaned my EGR about 10000 miles ago, I think it's time for another look in the EGR to check on it's state and I still might give a can of BG244 a blast! :D

Well done.

Ok Guys and Girls.

I popped the EGR off and took a couple of pics:

This is after about 10,000 miles on V-Power and I used an additive in a few tanks

I didn't expect to see this much build up, as with this original experiment, there's going to be no difference after 1 tank with BG244, so I cleaned it up and popper it all back together.

The big question now is, whose EGR is dirtier after a couple of thousand miles? The car running only V-Power diesel or the car on regular diesel? If there's any difference at all, I'm fairly sceptical now.

As I'm now clean again, I'll run a couple of thousand and check again if anyone on regular diesel would like to try the same. I'll just have to take a couple of clean pix for comparison.

Dave.

The question is the 10,000 miles you did was it local or motorway & what style of driving was performed?

As from reading up on the internet:

Motorway & high reving every so often prevents soot build up

Local & gentle driving in a diesel would cause more soot than normal

Diesels need to warm up properly to run clean, if yours has the DPF did it run its course?

In my humble opinion, there doesn't seem to be any evidence in this.

Some people drive the cars hard to blow the cobwebs out and MPG, soot build up and DPF regeneration don't seem to be any different to cars driven carefully.

I have owned my car for 12,000 miles and I cleaned the EGR out on the day i collected it. It was very clogged and the average mpg was reading 37 when i collected the car after the previous owner had sold it. There was also receipts in the car for fuel from Tesco.

I drive the car for maximum economy, use only Shell fuels (Mostly Vpower) and have dabbled with millers additives. My EGR is very lightly sooted up, my average MPG can be seen in my sig, and I have not witnessed a single DPF regeneration despite doing most journeys covering a minimum of 20+ miles, allowing the car plenty of time to get to temp and regenerate.

I think that maintaining the car with good oil at intervals, cleaning the air filter regularly and using decent fuel will do more for your car than a £25 tin of addditive. This very thread has proven that it has done nothing for the EGR valve. I will admit that BG244 does make the car run differently, and I think it is one of the best additives out there, but it's not a miracle cure for EGR valves, and driving styles don't appear to make any difference either.

Just my 2p worth.

In response to the gentleman above...

I drive mostly motorway, 26 miles to work (about 22 of them national speed limit) and the return journey later in the day. The drive in is very relaxed, 60-65 MPH tops for economy, sometimes the drive back is little more vigorous. My MPG is also below (fuelly thing) and recently I've had some high MPG tanks (47mpg), despite finding the EGR clogged to.... really clogged up with black.

I agree with Davey when he talks about driving style. I often 'boot it', in an attempt to clear out the cob webs, I've also never seem to have experienced DPF regeneration, unless I missed it? Not that regeneration would have an effect on the EGR as the DPF is after the EGR in the flow of gases!

I do have a tuning box, could this force more fuel through the system, hence more build up on EGR? (talking nonsense now) Considering my ecomony is ok, I don't think so.

So... we are at a loss then. I think diesel is the problem :P

Take care all.

Dave.

Something else I wanted to add to this debate/discussion....

Has anybody seen any 'before and after' pics taken as evidence of BG244 on any engine?
