Engine Warning Light

I've 2004 Avensis Deisal, its done 95,000 miles and has recently been serviced, yet this morning the Engine Warning Light has come on.... The car is running great so is it possible that the garage forgot to reset something and the car is saying it needs a service or is there going to be something wrong with it??

My understanding of this engine light is that it is not a 'service reminder' light - it is flagging up something wrong.

Could be minor, could be more major, although if the car is running smoothly it may be something as simply as a sensor.

I'd had my 05 Avensis for just two weeks in April when this light came on. Went off the following time I drove it. Took it back to the garage when it came back on a week later, and they changed the 02 sensors under warranty. Apparently these are quite common failures, so that could be your problem. I'd say keep an eye on it, and if it stays on, get it checked out. Or buy a code reader from eBay, and see what code it flagging up.

The 1st thing I'd be checking is the oil and coolant levels. When was the EGR valve last cleaned? If its been a time try running a tank of Shell v-Power diesel in it and a tin of BG244 in the fuel from Powerenhancers. I wouldn't like to be driving the car untill you find out why the lights have come on and which ones...

Hope all gets sorted for you

God I'm such a woman!! What's a EGR valve? and what's BG244? In theory the oil and the coolant levels should be ok as it literally has just been serviced in the last couple of weeks...

Think I'll have to go to the garage at lunch as I'd be useless with a diagnostic checker.... I can feel the money being pulled out of my wallet now.

xxx

No probs

The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculating valves) is a devise that is used to basically reduce emmisions in a car. If you Google it you'll read lots of posts about the thing. BG244 is a fuel treatment that you pour into your fuel that helps to clean/maintain the fuel injectors/fuel pump and EGR. BG244 is the only one (In my view) that really does do exactly what it says on the tin! And I've tried loads over the last 25+ years and 19 of those being a driving instructor. It is expensive (Compaired to others) but if you use the code "Club" on check out you'll get a discount if the offer is still running.

Just because its been and had a service it doesn't always mean that they have done what they should have. I've seen cases where they even forgot to put engine oil back in! This happened to my partners brothers Jag (£2,500)! He had to get a new (Re-con) engine fitted after the damage had been done. Always check to see that they have done what they should have and if you're unsure get someone who does or ask the garage to show you the work they have carried out.

Please bear in mind that the case of "No oil" is not a common thing to happen. But you really have got to make sure that the correct grade/spec (5W-30 is best like Mobil 1 ESP) of oil is used in your car or it can be an expensive mistake...
