Loss Of Power In 1St Gear

Hi Everybody

I have a high mileage 2004 Avensis 2.0L Diesel and seem to have an identical problem to the one Elaine posted recently below. Unfortunatley for me I haven't just purchased it and it isn't under warranty!!! It was happening really infrequently - once every few months or so but now it is becoming really frequent.

I was wondering if it could be related to the posts I've seen about the EGR valve as unfortunately I have guilty of using cheap supermarket fuel (with a 100 mile commute a day it's a case of having to). The problem only occurs in 1st gear though and I have not seen any drop in my MPG?

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance

Angela

Hi

I have an Toyota Avensis Verso (51) which has developed a problem, when I press the accelerator to increase speed there is no pull, the engine fades, and the engine management light comes on and it crawls forward at about 5 mph. If i switch off the engine then restart off we go again with no problem, i have only had the car for 4 weeks and all was fine untill yesterday but it has happened twice in 2 days - any ideas greatly received.

Thanks

ps 82000 miles FSH

hi angela, so you do 100 miles a day round trip yes. How long have you owned your car and has the egr ever been cleaned?

It might not be EGR but that pesky little valve seems to be responsible for a host of faults on the avensis. i clean mine out every 10000 miles i suggest you have someone look at it first as its a cheap fix unless its failed. As for the supermarket fuel i've never had any problems with the tesco stuff but maybe i'm a minority, a tank of tesco's finest always gets me back the germany when i visit the uk. Also visit your local halfrauds and get a bottle of millers diesel power ecomax which will clean your fuel system out when you add a shot to your fuel tank. Be careful with it though the lid leaks and it stinks if you get it on your hands.....do not leave it in your boot and expect the contents to remain in the bottle....they wont!!!

Millers is great stuff! I use it all the time on fill ups and have done for 20 years. But it doesnt come anywhere close the BG244 for helping to maintain the injectors and EGR valve

Thanks very much for the tips guys - ordered a can of BG244 online yesterday. I'll see how that goes and then check the EGR if there's no improvement.

Cheers
