Transmission Noise

Hi everyone

I have had my 2009 RAV4 2.2 diesel for just over six months. My wife and I like the car. However I had a slight oil leak appear under the gear box. The garage replaced the seal and the clutch which was slightly contaminated the clutch is fine and no more oil leaks. I have noticed that when the car is idling in neutral there is a slight transmission noise which disappears when I depress the clutch pedal. Can anyone help to undertsnad whether this a normal characteristic of the car or do I need to get it investigated. The garage have spent a couple of hours checking it over but they say everything is ok. They have offered to take the car in and spend a day putting extra sound insulation in the car. The car is still under the manufacturers warranty.

Can anyone help

Many thanks

1st of all I'd take the car to another Toyota dealer if you're not happy with the the car if its still making the noise and its still under Mr T's warranty. It sounds like to me the clutch release bearing to me.

Hi and welcome to the club.

For what its worth, I can confirm that our '07 D4D had the clutch release bearing replaced for very similar symptoms. Although I am sure that does depend on individual perception of what "loud" is. I am convinced that our one still changes the note when the clutch is in/out, but I am sure that Anchs explained at one point that a degree of noise is normal. I am also sure my one gives of a reasonably loud noise as I depress the clutch "under load" like downshifting when going up a hill or just when "rolling" towards a traffic light...

I can also say that, in my opinion, Mr T may have skimped a bit on the sound insulation, so getting more "asphalt mats" put in is a good thing. Bulking up the car is probably not that great for fuel economy, admittedly, but I am prepared to pay a coupe of quid a year for peace&quiet :)

Good luck.

Yep... It will make a slightly different sound when the clutch pedal is up or down and is quite normal as long as its not a racket.
