Alloy Wheel Cleaning

Hi

I'm fighting a loosing battle trying to clean the alloys on my 2011 TR. I try and wash the car by hand at least once a week, however right from the off the wheels have been difficult to rid of brake dust. The dust appears to be stickier than I've ever experienced on any car before and. I've tried the cheap alloy wheel cleaner from Home Bargains through to the extra strong Auto Glym with no real success.

Does anyone have any sugestions?

Give them a right royal good cleaning, then seal them with "Jetseal 109",(2 coats 30 minutes apart), not a cheap sealant, but really does seem to reject and allow easier cleaning of all contaminants you can fling at it. Avoid the wheel cleaners of the "acid" variety, as they do eventually break down the wheel's lacquer, and that gives brake dust a much better grip.

Thanks Kev

Picked up some Auto Glym wheel sealer today, so will give that a go at the weekend. Just need to get the dam things clean first! Cilit Bang is my next attack!

I find giving them a jet wash, then with hot soapy water + wheel brush, and rinse, then moving on to giving them a wheel cleaner, currenty using autoglym I think. For any tough bits still left or to get a proper smooth finish I move on to using some detailing clay. Of course as others say then finsh with waxing or sealing. Then next time you should be able to either jet wash or just use some soapy water.

Any decent valet with a high pressure jet washer would do a good job on alloy wheels and will be able to remove brake dust/road grime, i would suggest you got them done then add auto glym or whatever to allow easy clean in the future.

They look well when they are nice and clean, i am lucky i got a decent valet service in my area that keep my wheels in pristine condition.

Wonder Wheels. It is acid based but brings off just about everything. I have found just regularly polishing the wheels with 'normal' car body polish (Auto Glym and the like) helps keep the dust off.
