1998 Avensis 2.0 Gls Atf Flush

Hi Guys,

My avensis has recently been experiencing severe lag engaging reverse gear.

Had a word with a few people who suggested that the ATF may be the issue. My Avensis is now on c.135k miles and has never had an ATF change!

The real question for me now is - No garages in the area will do an ATF change, so how do I do it myself? - I've already done the oil and oil filter myself with great success!

I assume that the red dipstick next to the Battery cowel is the ATF dipstick?

Any help here would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Martin

That must be the dip stick for the auto gearbox ATF fluid. I've no experiance of your car but there must be a drain plug on the auto box somewhere. Even if its a "Sealed for life" unit it is still possible to drain it using an oil suction pump that you can buy off places like Amazon for £20.

Hi. Changing the ATF is just like changing the engine oil. Just as easy and no filter to change. Yes the red dipstick is the ATF one. Make sure the engine is warm. Locate the drain plug under the gearbox. Drain off old fluid. Replace with new. Make sure that level is correct - there are different markers dpending on whether the ATF is hot or cold. Don't overfill. Simple as that as I recall.

Fantastic - Thanks for the replies.

Since the dipstick is the only way into the pan, I assume that is the only way to fill it - with a funnel?

What kind of ATF is best suited for my motor, as I've heard that there are a few about?

Thanks in advance

Martin

If you go onto the Opie oil web site it will tell you what you need on the oil finder section for your car. Also you can use the Mobil ane Castrol sites to.

Yes.

Also the ATF container will have a narrow nozzle to do this and also ensure you check the level when done with the engine running, first when cold and then after a run when fully warmed up. Make sure you do not overfill! (it is possible to get the fluid back out using a narrow pipe (fed into the 'box down the filler pipe) and a syringe)
