Elderly Yaris - Update

I gave a short history of my son's Yaris 1.0 and it's semi restoration in this thread:

His Yaris has now done 108,000 miles and is still going strong but last Sunday night the engine warning light came on and would not go off again.. So tonight, when he came home.. I decided it was either a dirty MAF sensor or a faulty lambda sensor .

Since the cheapest and easiest things to do was clean the MAF sensor, I took it off, sprayed all the internal wires with carburettor cleaner and carefully and very gently cleaned them with a pipe cleaner.

Pictures of how to do this are on the Lexus forum: It would appear Lexus and Yaris share the same MAF sensor..

Let it dry, replaced it , switched on the ignition: and no engine warning light.. :-)

Time taken - about 25 minutes...

So if your engine warning light comes on unexpectedly without warning, and the engine appears to show no symptoms.. try the above first..

Cost : nil.. (I have an aerosol of carb cleaner and a stock of pipe cleaners for such purposes: Good quality cotton buds will do as long as you don't leave cotton remnants on the wires)
