Hi Mistermena,

Sorry to hear about your problem hope its not the same problem.

As you will recall my car went in over oil burning oil when in fact i never noticed any being lost at all, i had vsc trc lights on when it went into the garage and it was going to cost some ££££s to fixed they said.

Having been a regular customer for many years and each year to change vehicles, i did drop a hint to say i may go to BMW for my next vehicle not saying that was the dealership having a change of heart when they did come up with the idea of my engine as an oil burner so the work was done on warrantee as an oil burner.

I think you said you have had a new block i am going to attach a list of work carried out on my car and to be honest i can not see a new block included in the list unless its the piston sub assembly.

Hope you get yours sorted

Hi Pat,

Many thanks mate for the download list.

Yer I had a new block/pistons ect... The full 9 yards tbh. I've got a full printout of all the parts and cost of the warranty claim and its an extensive list. I'll try and take a picture of it at some point and post it up. I just hop that I'm wrong! But it dosnt look good atm. I'll be ringing the dealer next wek to get the car booked in.

So on your list did it give the new block or another name for it ?

On my list mate it gives the part number T11410-09416 Block Assy, cyl... Cost £1197.94 plus VAT

Hi,

This post could affect the way T-180 D4-D owners think about an engine re-build!!!

I've just been out to check my oil and coolant on my T-180 Avensis estate as I always do everytime I go anywhere in it, only to find that there are water marks on the engine cover and the coolant seems to have droped a little. This is the 2nd new engine it has had and only done about 4000 miles since it was re-built! The 1st re-build lasted less than 9000 miles. I had to drive to Staffordshire on thusday to pick up my kids for the weekend and it was chucking it down so I'm hoping that the water marks are from the heavy rain rather than a head gasket fail again.

The problem is there seems to be white water marks (Front lower edge closest to expansion tank) as well as clear splatter ones (Top part of the cover closer to the oil filler cap) so I'm unsure to what to think! I'm going to keep an eye on it over the next couple of days and get it booked in to Mr T so they can have a look at it. I love the T-180 estate but if its gone again (After such a short time) it would be the icing on the cake for me! :crybaby:

I just hope that my suspicions are wrong! :g:

Hi mate, sorry to hear about your worries on the head gasket situation, just out of interest do you think the tuning box you have on the car could have anything to do with it and if so do you leave it on when you take it to Mr T?

Regards and good luck, Pete.

Hi Pete,

No I dont think that a box has anything to do with at all. The car has never been driven hard. The problem has to be a gasket one (If any) and a box could not make that go in anyway. And yes I'll leave it on

Honda are good cars but they are not without their own problems! my mate owned a 2.2 accord Diesel and could'nt keep up with the oil consumption, apparently the diesels are TRUE oil burners, I asked an AA mechanic if this was true and he confirmed it, he said he had known of 2 that actually ran out of oil and siezed within 2k mls of a full service :crybaby:, in comparison my wifes Avensis D4 2ltr has now covered over 175k mls and does,nt use a drop of oil between changes, if fact my D4D 2ltr has covered 95k mls and runs like a swiss watch :yahoo:, I seems that some D4Ds have head gasket probs and others dont, I also own a Mercedes 320CDI CLS and although its a fantastic drive, my Avensis is the one I have complete faith in.

This is Just my opinion from past and present experiences with Toyota Cars.

I love em.

I didn't know that the Honda 2.2 diesel suffered with an oil problem. I knew about the exhaust manafold cracking that would almost gas you to death in the car! Having an engine seize on you woul be so dangerous!

Hi all, fairly new to this forum, wife has a Yaris(new) and iv'e just bought/deposit down on an Avensis t-spirit,07 with 112k FSH(dealer) with a 3 month P&L warranty, iv'e read the issues with this engine and the head gasket probs, when i checked it over there was no issues with the symptoms of HG failure(fingers x'd).

After a bit of research it seems Toyota have changed the design of the gasket and there seems to be a few aftermarket ones that claim to be better than the OEM, QUESTION: would it be worth changing the gasket as a preventative measure on an engine that is displaying no symptoms as of yet?? does the engine have to come out to do this??. pro's and cons......discuss!!.

It seems that after reading all the posts and google searching i can get my hands on that this problem has only been reported by a small minority of owners on here(although it must be a significant issue for Toyota to extend the warranty and even carry out out of warranty repairs in a few cases) is there any figures of percentages of Avensis affected??.

Maybe i'm being paranoid but at this stage i still have an option of just losing a couple of hundred deposit or even choosing a different car from the dealer.

Cheers PK

Hi and welcome Paul,

yes the engine does need to come out to change the head gasket, if you feel uncomfortable buying the 2.2 Avensis then the 2.0 does not seem to suffer in the same way. Why not try to push the dealer for an extended warranty because at 112k even Toyota won't fix it for free with or without FSH.

I am more than happy with mine but there is always that nagging little worry in the back of my mind about the gasket problem.

Regards Pete.

Hi mistermena, you got any updates on your vehicle yet ? Have you taken it back to Mr T yet ?

I hope its not the HG and is just a small blip, i too like the tourer T180, been doing a bit of reading on the subject and understand a new design gasket has been made and they been fitted to problem motors.

This is some pictures of the water marks (That I've just taken today) that I have on the engine cover. Not great quality (And they dont seem to show how white some of the marks were yesterday when I 1st noticed it) but the best I can do atm... The engine cover was cleaned just befor I did my 300 mile round trip and there wasn't a mark on it anywhere.

Thanks for the pictures.

When the HG leak causes coolant to be ejected, does it come from header tank cap, or the end of the short rubber pipe that is connected to the left (looking from the front of the car)neck of the header tank ?

The photos suggest the lquid has come from the cap rather than from the pipe, where I expected it to be released.

Any thoughts anyone ?

Chris

Just a thought on this and info from a Toyota mechanic, he reckons the problem lies with the super long life coolant that Toyota insist on using, it gets into tiny fissures in the head/gasket over heats and causes irregularities in the head(shuffling) and ultimately failure, i suggested an different coolant changed on a regular basis and he said it may well cure the problem???, i dont know if anyone has compared coolant makes for different manufacturers as a lot of newish motors use ally for the engines these days.

As i say, just a thought.

Mister, he also stated that not all mechs are saints and that for engine rebuilds to fail so close together could be down to incompetance ie. the head bolts stretch and if new ones aren't used then the bolt will bottom in the block and be unable to reach the correct torque settings, i used to always(and still do) re torque bolts after a few miles as things can relax, do Toyota call the car back in after a few hundred miles after a rebuild to re torque??

again, just a thought

Hi guys,

Just a quick update on the T-180.

I've taken the car into Mr T to let them have a look at the water marks that I'd found on the engine cover. After a few hours there I was told that there were no leakes that they could find. So I asked how they thought the water marks have appeared? but they were not sure! So I've been asked to keep an eye on the coolant levels and see how I get on. I've cleaned to cover again so if I see any marks it will show up straight away.

I dont really like to have to keep on worrying about the car, but I'll just keep an eye on it and if I find anymore white splatter marks I'll have to return to the dealer for further inspections...

It could have been. But I'd expect the marks to be elsewhere also and not just centered by the coolant filer cap. I'm still not convinced tbh that its not a head gasket failing! But I'll do as the dealer suggests and just keep and eye on it. just have this gut feeling about it...

ok what we'll do is get the car back remove the engine again to check the torque of the head bolts.....lol yip the engine would have to come back out again...

but i do agree with your toyota tech friend i have rebuilt more of these engines than i care to remember and not had one come back yet....well apart from for a service lol..so im thinking they are doing something wrong..........

have you got an other dealer near you?the one you have been going too sounds a bit dodgy......

it does sound like it could poss be going again mate...

Hiya mate,

It does look like to me that its starting to fail again an all. I have another dealer that is close to me, but they are within the same dealer group! So that could get a little difficult. I have a 300 mile trip to do over the weekend so that should show up any problems if the gasket is failing. If it does I'll be straight back to the dealer, and if they cant help then I'll take it to another to test and hopefully correct.

Many thanks again mate for your advice. You're a diamond

Good decision Pekay. I'm currently renting a 02 plate octavia with over 310 thousand miles on clock and getting 50+ to gallon around town. I know what my next car is going to be.

Hi Pat.

Yer the cars been back into the dealer and they've seen the water marks. But they they said that they cant find a problem and to keep an eye on it. So I've cleaned the plastic engine cover and taken the car for a 300 mile run and guess what? The spatter marks are back on the cover again so its going back in! The oil level has dropped and so has the coolant level. I know what I think it is :bored:
