96 Rav4 Immobilizer

Hi all

new to this forum

just bought a 96 RAV4 non runner

Have trawled this forum and the internet before posting this - so here goes

Starts and runs for about 2 seconds, then dies

assertained that this must be the immobiliser not registering the key

Seen posts relating to removing the immobilizer but this seems to be relating to just removing the alarm,

the immobilizer on my model cannot be removed or bypassed as the main ecu needs a signal from it.

From my research I have found that the code is stored on a plug-in eeprom in the immobilizer

This eeprom can be programmed with virgin or reset code that registers the key (any key) when it is inserted for the first time.

the part no for my immobilizer is 89780-42010 and the chip is a 93LC66 which can be programmed using a standard microchip eeprom programmer

hope someone can shed a bit more light on this - as only theory at the moment and our lass wants her new car running soon.

cheers

John

Welcome to the forum.

The original alarm and immobiliser was fitted to the RAV4 (1994 models) when they arrived in the UK. Unfortunately the company supplying them went bust, as did their alarms some years later, hence the posts about removing the annoying thing.

Slightly later, and it seems to be random cars in 1995, another alarm was fitted with the transponder thingy in the key. I don't know much about this one other than its a fairly basic thing.

I'd personally get the thing removed by an auto-electrician - not many crims are looking for a 15 year old car to nick.

thanks for the reply

the whole idea though, is diy so others can also do it themselves

The eeprom is only 18p, just need the virgin code

will update when i find the diy solution

Another solution would be to swap the ecu for a pre- eeprom jobbie. Its the same engine etc after all.
