Ermm what happened to the new Avensis 2.0 petrol engines ? seems like the 1.8 petrol is the flagship petrol ones now, anyone know reason why 2.0 petrol engine is stopped ? seeing other competitors like accord, mazda 6 etc has them.

The new 1.8 is quite a powerful engine with very little performance difference between it and the 2 litre, I know some will disagree though.

I assume the 2 litre was dropped because of this.

Toyota has dropped many of their engines for slightly smaller capacity ones (for their flagship models at least) because their new Valvematic engines produce more power and torque as well as having much better emissions. This means they reduce capacity to improve Co2 emissions over their product range. For instance, they practically dropped my 1.6 Dual VVT-i (2007 Auris) for the new 1.33 Valvematic (also called VVT-i) because there's only 10hp in it. But the 1.33s are more economical, cost less tax & insurance etc.

Personally I'm happy with the 1.6, but I see the logic. Although they had to re-introduce the 1.6 (only recently) because of popular demand in the UK... we're a fussy bunch and like our 1.6s despite the insane fuel prices we bleed for! Funny how Toyota try to make the world a better place but we insist on wrecking it further.

The difference between 1.33 and 1.6 is in torque. There is a saying: "There is not replacement for displacement". The 1.33l engine must be revved hard in order to obtain the same performance as the 1.6l on the same car.

I drove both engines on an Auris and i liked much more the 1.6 one than the 1.33l. In my opinion though, the best engine for that car is the 1.8l. In Romania(the place i live) were sold at a time Auris equipped with the 1.8l engine.

In case of the Avensis, for the older generation(T25) the best selling engine was also the 1.8l, due to the fact that it represented the best compromise between fuel economy and performance output. I have a friend who had 2 Avensis cars, one having the 2.0 D-4 engine and one having the 1.8l vvt-i engine. He said there was little difference between them and the difference appeared only after 5000 rpm but the difference in consumption was quite big (6 miles/gallon) in the city. I assume it`s the same story with the newer one, the T27, the small difference in output and performance makes the 1.8l engine the best seller.

Too many models and powertrains that closely matched each other, as said above. Toyota's quest is to get to 0% emissions, so every new model will have lower and lower CO2 figures, hence dropping engines like the 2.0 and 1.6 in favour of 1.8 and 1.33

I'd have to disagree with your friend on that one. The 2.0 has nearly 20bhp more than the 1.8! I've driven the 1.8 and it felt much slower than mine. Mine still manages 36mpg too.

To get the 1.8 going you have to drive it quite hard and get the revs up, it will fly along when you do this, trust me, Ive just come out of one having run it for about 4 months. I averaged 40mpg on a journey to Cornwall a few weeks back

45mpg on a long run in mine and I think mine is 120 or 125BHP it's a 2.0 CDX

The official data states a difference of less than 1 second for the 0-60mph run and a top speed slightly bigger.

The 2.0 in Bucharest(city) didn`t manage more than 15 miles/gallon where the 1.8 managed ~22 miles/gallon.

Outside the city(but not on the highway) the 2.0 managed ussualy 34 mpg where the 1.8 managed 40mpg.

I`ve been as a passenger in a 2.0 D-4 powered Avensis and I own a 1.8l vvt-i powered Avensis. The difference between them didn`t strike me at all. Sure, when driving it hard, there is a difference but otherwise the differences where not high enough to worth spending a few thousand euros more for the 2.0 Avensis.

Is yours the early 2.0? If so that is right however the later 2.0 D4/VVTi is 146bhp (against 128bhp for the early one), 127bhp for the later VVTi 1.8 (against 108bhp for the early 1.8) both of which should be a fair bit more relaxed to drive quickly (albeit still a bit peaky).

I would not want any less than a 2.0 in an Avensis owing to the weight of the car. In my opinion lower capacity engines which use high rpm do not aid the 'driving experience' - heading for Civic Type-R territory. Agree it is great

Interesting topic this is, and strange the 2.0 got dropped, seeing Accord has a 2.0 as with mazda 6 and i presume mondeo too, hm wonder what the chances other countries still offered with the 2.0 petrol Avensis after all they seem to get alot that UK dont :(

In Romania the 2.0 Valvematic engine, producing 152 hp is still sold.

Wrong..... I drive the 2 litre engine and as far as I recall it delivers 142bhp. I have on order a replacement Avensis with a 1.8 litre engine and this delivers 147bhp

Sorry but the 2 litre does not deliver close to 167bhp

I just checked the NL configurator and the 2.0 can still be ordered here.

It's 152bhp, whereas the 1.8 delivers 147bhp.

The 2.0 Liter is less economical on fuel, is heavier, more expensive and performs only marginally better on both bhp and torque.

I wonder when it will be dropped...
