Dangers Of Mobile Phones

Not wishing to upset anyone but we showed this clip in a safety brief at work which is a graphic reconstruction of a real event. Some of the drivers wanted to have a copy to pass on and in some cases spread the message so I've attached it here.

Be warned it is not pleasant to watch and the harrowing situation is designed to shock;

Frightening! One reason we dont carry mobiles in our lorries!

Cars should be 'shielded' so mobiles don't work in them. Drivers cannot be trusted not to use them when at the wheel. Sad but true.

I agree! Some drivers just can't put their mobiles down.

A nice thought, but easier said than done unfortunately.

How does a mobile use a trucker?

Anyway, it's certainly a sobering message and I could rant for England about driver behaviour.

Apology acceptd Big k! Seriously though, I see it every day an sometimes on single track roads! Unless its a "handsfree" system with no earplugs involved, its not acceptable.

Its a graphic and frighteningly real clip. If i recall, it was made a few years ago by young actors and with help from the Welsh emergency services. Highlights the danger very well. In saying that, using a mobile phone is bad but i've seen a few actually texting whilst trying to drive, they were all over the road.

Not only does the film demonstrate the stupidity of using mobiles at the wheel, but also the failure of so called 'safety' cameras.

Do away with them, put plod back on the streets where he belongs and mobile use at the wheel may decrease!

We have some major roadworks going on near where I live. There is a 50mph limit through them. Normally the contractors would have paid for speed cameras at the site, instead they opted to pay for extra policing, actual bobbies, real live ones....

According to the local paper the other night, they, the real bobbies, have not only caught over a thousand people speeding through the site, but have recovered several stolen cars, removed a few unsafe lorries from the road, charged more mobile users than can be counted and several wanted criminals have been arrested!

Show me a 'safety' camera that can do that IN 3 MONTHS !!

Rant over, have a nice day :yahoo:

I reckon that using a mobile whilst on the move needs to be punishable by a minimum driving ban like drink driving. Using a mobile, and especially texting, is probably just as dangerous to the rest of us as coming across a drunk driver. When I see people obviously looking away from the road & probably texting, I see red. Shooting's too good for them!

It irritates me when you see somebody walk to their car on the phone then start it up and drive away with one hand. Why don't they either finish the call or wait before driving? What is it that is so urgent? Not so long ago there was no mobiles and we seemed to manage without solving world peace on the move. Most phones have hands free or can be linked by bluetooth but they don't seem to know how to use it. I suppose the benefit is we don't have to listen to both sides of an inane conversation about what they will be doing when they meet in 7 minutes time - must solve that conundrum on the move!!!

The OP of this post kindly fitted me a Toyota Hands Free kit and saved me a fortune, so now I can be on the phone safely and talk away with no danger to other drivers.....PANTS !!!! I wish I had a pound for every time I have been on my hands free phone, both in retirement and previously whilst working, and found myself having missed my turn off, or taken the wrong road, coz my thoughts were elsewhere on my totally safe handsfree phone.....

As for texting whilst driving....words defy me....see it all the time, especially very young folk who cannot do without their phones.

Big Kev

I remember seeing something on 5th gear a while back where they put a driver in a simulator and asked questions on a mobile phone. It was just simple multiple choice and basic maths. They did the test both hands free and with a phone in hand. It was the fact the the mind is pre-occupied that causes the danger, not holding the phone itself.

Despite all of this, I'm often amazed at the number of people I see talking (or even texting) whilst driving. A short beep of the horn usually jolts them back into the real world though.

Lol, I was sitting at a set of traffic lights the other day and some *****ole was on the phone in the car next to me. I gave him a very short toot and put my hand to my ear - he gave me the finger and promptly drove into the back of the car in front of him!

I think it probably wasn't a good idea :crybaby:

I prefer to think that bluetooth kits are safer than holding the phone but it is as important to maintain concentration as it is talking to a passenger.

Priceless - I trust you will be a witness for the unfortunate driver that got rear ended................

I do wish I could fire self-adhesive copies of the highway code at people as a kind of hint sometimes
