Auris Sr

I will keep this simple as this may cover more than one topic

Ive bought this second hand SR Auris its the VVTi one and its got only 15k on the clock one previous

Things that bug me

when im driving with the fans on and i switch the engine off the button that recycles the air come on everytime . never remembers the settings

when im accerating the car feels like got a turbo lag.

its sits in high revs all the time and when im driving it hard the revs are hitting the red.

its constantly warm without the aircon on , and when the aircon is on it drinks fuel like nobodys business

no six speed gearbox . what were they thinking of. this car is really not great at driving on moterways

the noise of the engine is quiet loud at higher speeds,

i dont think this car was designed for being a sport and i feel very let down that diesals out perform. Whats the point of having a 130 BHP car and it struggles above a certain speed. (the speed im keeping to myself for legal reasons)

i had a top of the range nissan diesal and never experienced faults like this before.

SR is just the trim level, it is marketed as sporty by looks.

It is the buyer's responsibility to buy a car that suits them, noone forced this car on you did they?

Did you not test drive it? If you did you couldn't have tested it thoroughly enough to come on here to complain about so many things?

You sound like someone who generalise diesel and petrol without consideration on power, torque, weight of car, setup of car, gearing and purpose of car and noone should need to tell you to be happy with the BASICS before you hand over your money and buy the car.

At this juncture I feel sorry for you, but I am afraid you have made a very uneducated and ill considered choice of car if all of the above bothers you so much. Next time research properly.

A few basic things:

  1. If your car only has 5 forward gears, the gears would rev higher to reach the speed required as compared to the same car with 6 gears. Also the gearing is done to suit the power and torque output of the engine, so your car needs the rev to do that work.
  2. Air con always uses lots of fuel especially on smaller capacity engine cars
  3. What you percieve as 'diesel outperforms your car' is probably due to torque. Diesel engines has a lot more usable torque and hence gives you a little more percieved acceleration
  4. If you wanted performance then choose more power and less weight, again its not the car's fault.

The T180 I had would out-perform any petrol that i normally come across at mid range acceleration, but that doesn't mean anything and does not generalise ALL diesel. That would be a ridiculous thing to do...

Good luck and hope you are not as ignorant as you are coming across in person.

Hey Just Me,

I know that you are just talking about things that BUG you. You're not suggesting that this is the end of the world. A/C does take a lot out of the engine But not as much as it did in earlier times. Then it was about 10%. Now it's not even half that. I leave mine on most of the time. Oh yes, and I too have a 1.6.

Because of the small engine, I use the recirculation button all the time that the A/C is on. That means more mpg.

You say that the car is warm all the time. What is your fan doing? Without the fan no air circulates. My fan is on 2 all the time except when it's hot and I use 3 or 4.

Some drivers like to hit the red in lower gears. So what speed are you doing when you hit the red? You need to get rid of some of the lead in your shoes maybe??

I must admit I do not do more than about 85-90 on motorways. I bought a small car to improve my mpg. I fitted a Cruise and motorways I do normally at 70.

I was very surprised how quiet the car is at 70 and under. At idling I can hardly hear it.

Thanks for having a gripe. Lots of guys want to hear these stories so they get the truth about other driver's experiences.

Safe motoring

I think most of us with an earlier 1.6 would like a 6 speed box.but it seems you cant fit one due to differnt mounting of of the 6 speed box, which is a shame.

but saying that, most of my driving is on rural roads, with many bends etc, which is ok with the 5 speed box.

coming off diesels after 26 years the engine does rev more than i was used to.but am getting used to it..

i leave my climate control on all the time, and as i am getting a 38.6 mpg average on Fuelly and a best of 41 mpg.im not complaining.

i use outside air for the air con,but if stopped for a while on a hot day it changes to recirculated.pity it does not revert to outside air when chosen temp is reached, but thats no problem.

yes the engine is very quiet,a couple of times when first owning the car,ive got out and forgotten the engine was running as there is no key to turn off, being smart start.

over all i am pleased with the car,but peeved how poor quality the internal trim is.

but the car does all it says on the box, otherwise.so there are more + than -.

Sounds like someone didn't do their research before purchasing an entire car!

Ok, first of all your SR Badge only indicates the trim level. You don't have a sporty engine, light weight panels, aerodynamics or a stiff suspension. In fact, like all Auris' short of the 180 models you even a torsion bar rear suspension which is even more old fashioned than the leaf-springs they fit to Corvettes xD But the torsion design does give you more space in your boot, so don't forget that.

No doubt the Auris looks good on paper, it's got the most powerful 1.6 petrol by comparison to its rivals (marginally) and despite it's tower-tall roof line it's not to heavy either. But in terms of feels, if you wanted something sporty, the Focus, the Civic and the Golf all feel much more exciting, confident and inspiring on the drive. Focus and Golf give you their performance, easily accessible and as feel goes they have few rivals. Civic asks you to work for it, keeping revs even higher than the Auris and in return the Civic rewards you back.

Admittedly the Auris makes you really work for it with few returns in terms of feel. But keep it bouncing between 4-5k rpm and you'll be laughing. Peak torque for the 1.6 comes in at 5.2k rpm so it's no point revving higher, drop lower than 3.8k rpm and you've drowned the power with weight. Keep revs high between changes so you're nice and high when pulling acceleration.

And lastly, the Auris DOES NOT NEED A 6th GEAR!!! The car is smooth and quiet enough with enough high end torque to cruise and overtake at any legal speed on the motorway. With all that torque, the 1.6 Dual VVT-i has lots of usable power from low revs all the way up. Frankly I'm glad Toyota didn't fit that final 6th cog because considering the majority of thus-sized hatch backs in urban/city areas... as do I, driving around town would be absolutely awful! You'd bump all the ratios down a percentage and you'd smoke that clutch inside of a week.

Auris still rules...

the same thing applies to the mazda 3 1.6 sport, its just sporty trim, no power or chassis benifits etc.

i would rather have my sr auris rather than the mazda 3 1.6 sport, 0-60 12.2 seconds top speed 114 mph, and only 103 bhp !! for such a modern design i think they are very poor stats.makes the auris seem like a hot hatch in comparison !

I wouldn't mind the Mazda 3... it sits on the Focus chassis which is never a bad thing! They also tend to be nicer than it's sister's equivalent model/price. Performance difference is marginal, for a start NO ONE ever races from the lights to 60mph... so I always ignore that stat. Overtaking from 30mph is much more likely and this is where the Auris wins over most rivals. Traditionally, very few sporty n/a 1.6s produced more than 115hp. It's a bit galling my 1988 MR2 had the same if not more power than my 2007 Auris and made a MUCH better sound. To my mind, only Honda makes big power 1.6s... 100 per litre, impressive.

NB. Most hatches NEED to be economical, one of the main reasons why I didn't go for the Honda, unfortunately.

Im not always booting it, when i drive it normally the car doesnt have enough revs to drive up steep hills. So it needs a 4k on counter. when ur at 80ish the revs are already above 4.

i dont have a complaint on the looks or the idle noise , i hear knocks and bumps on the road all the time. the fans are on all the time and they are set on lo. and its still a very hot car , whether the suns out or not.
