Turbo Woes?

Turnwise

driving on the motorway today, my Avensis D4-D seemed to occassionally lose power at around 70mph under gentle acceleration - it just didn't seem to respond to the pedalvery well until it was pressed hard and the there was a whoosh of power..

With the windows down there is a very LOUD hiss/whoosh sound coming from the car during acceleration, and the volume is directly affected by pressure on the accelerator.

I've had good look around inside the engine bay, from above and below, with a torch. I don't actually know where the turbo is, I was just hoping I might see a pipe lose, or broken. No joy.

Where exactly should I be looking???

turbo is at the rear of the engine.

You need to look at the turbo pipe

thats from the airfilter box to the turbo

is that a corrugated black rubber pipe, with a smaller pipe coming off midway? I've checked over that (it's very readily accesible!) and it looks ok....

Yes the small pipe should be going to the engine block.

Take the pipe off and inspect for cracks.

report back

look down the front of the engine were the throttle body is you will see a large rubber pipe(only around 4 inches long) that connects too the throttle body with two hose clips on it...make sure those are tight and havent come off/loosened......i have seen this a lot over the last few months....

will look in the morning thanks, checked the rubber pipe to the turbo and no breaks or cracks, actually in very good nick.

Throttle body pipe looks fine.

the hissing noise only occurs under load, it starts and builds in volume as the load increases, and lowers and stops as the load is reduced.

took it into a garage this morning. they suspect an intercooler pipe.... we'll see what they say once they've had a look.

Well , the garage said it was a split in the 'turbo pipe' - clearly not an expensive or difficult job, since it was fixed for the grand sum of £33 :toast:

Since I couldn't get down to pick it up before the service place shut, I had to collect the keys from their petrol station and didn't get a chance to find out exactly where this pipe is. Shame, as I'd have really liked to know where to look if it ever happens again if its so easy to fix!

Still, very glad to have it back fixed
