Judder

Hi everyone,

It's a 2006/7 Rav 4 XT4 2.2 diesel with just under 40,000 on the clock. Just recently, been experiencing an intermittent judder on pulling away. I'm by the coast, on holiday, and so haven't needed to use the car as often as I usually do, and it's been sitting in an open garage ((under cover, but no door) near the coast. I've used it a couple of times and it seemed the judder was worse than it's been before. Any ideas?

- something on the clutch (perhaps from sitting in damp sea air and not being driven much)?

- could this be a DMF issue? (Is the DMF problem an issue on the 2006/2007 Series 3 cars?)

I called my local Toyota dealership (where I bought the car, and the people who've serviced/MOT'd it for the last few years), but they wouldn't give any advice on the phone and wanted £50 to look at it. I'm tempted to take it into my local MOT garage when I get back... but is this whole DMF thing something a local non-specialist garage would know about? Would they know how to check it?

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers!

- B

I live within 300 metres of the sea and I have never had any of the above issues... So I would doubt the sea air is a problem to be honest.....

Hi,

That was what happened before my DMF failed, twice I might add.....

The garage wouldnt confirm until the DMF had failed that the judder was a sign....

However DMF failures were supposed to be limited to 02/03 version, all the same I would probably invest £50 to check it out than pay £1800 to fix the problem unless of course you have warranty..

Cheers

Thanks. Reckon I ought to get it checked, then.

Does anyone know whether most local MOT garages would know where to look/how to check? (I'm not being tight... it's not so much the 50 quid, but the day out of my working week I'm worrying about since the Toyota garage is a long way from home.)

Cheers, B

An MOT station will be no better placed to give an opinion than a normal small or independent garage .. A Toyota Dealer will know these cars inside out and will have great experience of Your car.. Most will not charge just to diagnose the problem especially if You ask nicely and give them the impression You will be asking them to carry out the repairs .. HTH

If it's juddering on pull away or low gears then this is the symptoms of a dmf. Mine did it in 1st 2nd gear and also a metallic rattling sound.. Best get it looked at. £50 is a lot to tell you yes or no, so I would question this..

Juddering on a 4.3 due to DMF failure is extremely rare. If it does it a little bit if you slip the clutch then forget it and try to adjust your technique to use less revs and get the clutch engaged. If it is more pronounced and does it in more than 1st gear, ask a recommended local garage to look over it but let us know what they say here first before coughing up any money.

Thanks everyone for your advice with this.

Anchorman... thought I'd let you know what I was told when I visited a main dealer yesterday:

We took the car out, and although I couldn't recreate the "judder" (which is intermittent), he thought the car was possibly a bit noisier than it should be. He wondered about 2 things: DMF (possibly cause of noise), injectors (possible cause of judder).

He took the car for some diagnostics (partic. the injectors). Apparently the spec is up to 4 (I've no idea what these numbers refer to), and one of my injectors was reading 3.6... not a problem right now, he said, conceivably an issue in the future, or it could stay like this for tens of thousands of miles. Re. the DMF, it's not noisy enough at the moment to really do anything with it, and it may just always have sounded like this.

His advice:

If the noise gets much worse, come back in re. DMF.

If the injectors go I'll know about it. (From what he described it'll be like a spark plug failure on a petrol engine.)

So - for now - just monitor it.

The good news... doesn't sound as if anything major is on the point of failing.

Hope that makes sense?

And thanks again,

B

Does this happen when you lift the clutch? and does it stop once your moving? How high is the clutch pedal is it very high? If it is any of the above then It sounds like the clutch snatching due to wear or possibly somehow oil may have found its way onto it.

Hope this helps

Hmmm. Well, I don't really know what to think of his explanantion regarding the injectors but I must admit I would live with it for a while. If you do find anything untoward, like it uses oil or clogs up the EGR, don't forget it qualifies for a new engine under extended warranty and that will include the injectors.

Tattoo

It has special clutch that will not come to the top when it is worn. This is because the stroke needs to stay constant for the hill start control and on higher models, the keyless entry. It will eventually start to slip with the bite point in the middle of the stroke.
