Oil Light

Hi ALL

have a toyota carina e 2ltr (92plate) auto that has done 318000 miles, still runs sweet but every month or so the oil can with the wavey line (orange ) will come on for a few seconds and then go .. there is plenty of oil in the engine and no strange noises...

where would on start to look to track down the problem or has anyone had a similar problem ????

also how does one check the levels on the transmission oil .. does one check with the engine running ??

any help would be great
