Heads Up On Another Egr Issue

:thumbsup:Hi everyone, just wanted to give you all the heads up on a problem i had with my 07 d4d Avensis.

I regularly use this forum for advice so thanks for everyone's comments, they are very useful. Any way, the problem - I had the usual lack of low down power normally associated with blocked EGR valve and manifold but with the added problem of major puff of black smoke when the engine picked up.

I removed and cleaned the EGR valve as before and fitted it back on the car. Instead of sorting it, i still had the problem. I removed it again and the problem turned out to be the shutters in the valve were not seating; there was about a 1 - 1.5mm gap! Therefore when the valve seemed closed it could still allow exhaust gas to pass through. This gap's effect on performance was astonishing. All i did was to clean it again more carefully until the valve closed correctly and the problem went away.

The moral here is to ensure the valve is closing correctly after you have cleaned it and before you re-assemble.

All the best

out of interest, were you following any guide to clean out the EGR valve or do you have any links to a guide showing how to do this?

Billy, i was just following the posts on this forum on how to do it. If you search for cleaning egr valve etc. you should find it ok.

Thanks for your comments guys. Just had a high revs blast on the motorway to hopefully clear out the last soot and un-burnt fuel. Car runs really well again.
