Hi everyone.

any MK3 supra owners, or users of the w58 manual gearbox on here? if so what horse power do you run yours at, and what are peoples views of the power they can take? ive spoken to an owner with a mk4 top mount 2jz conversion in his supra, and he is running a w58 and has been for 3 years with about 400bhp. but ive read others on the net say dont even consider them as they are total crap? whats the truth? can one take say max 500 FLYWHEEL horse power and last for a few months without breaking?or are they realy not capable of this power?

i am aware of the R154 but they are rare and twice the price. just wanted to see if i can get one thats more available should i break one.

REALY REALY REALY need some help as i cant move my project on until i choose a box for it. and for those interested its a 1jz soarer engine that will be going in my Nissan skyline R33 gtst.

cheers guys and gals

Jay

500bhp is deemed the agree'd (by supra tuners) point that a W58 will almost certainly die when bolted onto a 2JZ-GTE.

Its not power that breaks gearboxes though, its torque.

When i put a 1UZ (4.0 V8) into my MK2 Supra i ditched the W58 even though i was only running 350bhp, because the V8 low down torque would have destroyed the W58 quickly.

I went down the R154 route and they arent actually rare. There are as many R154's floating around as there are MK4 Supra W58's. (The V8 actually started to destroy the R154 before i sold it!)

I paid £200 for my R154 from a member of MKIIISupra.net.

There are many different versions of the W58. The supras all used W58's including the MK1.

Its only the MK4 W58 that will take 500bhp. I wouldnt bother with any of the older W58's - they are just too weak. I think this is why some say the gearboxes are crap as they get the mk1/2/3 gearbox which hasnt got a chance of handling 400bhp reliably let alone 500bhp.

By the way only the MK4 Supra came with a W58 which has a bell housing that will fit a 1JZ. The 1JZ soarer actually came out of the factory with the option of the R154 gearbox. But getting a Soarer version of the R154 is almost impossible as there were so few produced.

The MK3 Supra Turbo R154 has a different bell housing and also the input shaft is longer than the soarer version.

So if you got a Supra R154 it would be best to get a custom bell housing from somewhere like Castlemaine Rod Shop.

Or..... you could get the 6 Speed MK4 Supra Twin Turbo Getrag box. The strongest box of them all and also goes straight onto a 1JZ.
